Template
A PDCA template is a structured document that guides teams through the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, a
four-step repetitive framework for continuous improvement. It gives organizations a repeatable,
systematic way to identify problems, implement solutions, measure results, and lock in improvements
over time.
Rather than reacting to issues ad hoc, a PDCA template ensures every improvement effort follows a
disciplined process with clear ownership, timelines, and measurable outcomes.
In an EHS context, the cycle maps directly onto the realities of managing chemical hazards:
Plan: An EHS manager identifies a hazard or compliance gap: a near-miss, a regulatory finding, an exposure
concern, or an SDS deficiency. The team documents the chemicals involved, performs root cause analysis,
and sets measurable objectives tied to standards like OSHA, GHS/HazCom, or EPA regulations.
Do: Controls are implemented following the Hierarchy of Controls, from elimination and substitution at the top,
down to engineering controls, administrative measures, and PPE. Action items are assigned to responsible
parties and deadlines. Training and hazard communication activities are documented.
Check: Effectiveness is measured through air monitoring, industrial hygiene sampling, internal audits, PPE
compliance checks, and KPI tracking. Results are compared against the original objectives to identify gaps.
Act: If controls worked, they were standardized into SOPs, Chemical Hygiene Plans, and updated inspection
checklists, and scaled across the facility. If gaps remain, the findings feed directly into the next PDCA cycle.
