OSHA RESPIRATORY PROTECTION STANDARD: A SIMPLIFIED GUIDE OSHA's Respiratory Protection Standard, 29 CFR 1910.134, is the federal rule that governs how employers select, provide, fit-test, maintain, and train workers to use respirators wherever airborne hazards can't be fully controlled through engineering or administrative means. The standard gives employers a repeatable system they can stand behind: identify the hazard, select the right equipment, medically clear each worker, fit-test them, train them, and maintain records. When each step is in place, the program works the same way on day one as it does five years in. Any employer who requires respirator on how to maintain a site-specific written Respiratory Protection Program (RPP). Employers who allow only voluntary use of filtering facepieces must still provide workers with OSHA Appendix D information. Must be current and available to employees. 1 EHS / Industrial Hygienist Hazard Assessment Identify airborne contaminants: chemical state, physical form, estimated exposures. Unknownexposures are treated as IDLH. 2 Program Administrator Respirator Selection Select NIOSH-certified respirators matched to hazard type and Assigned Protection Factors (APFs). 3 PLHCP + Employer Medical Evaluation PLHCP clearance before fit testing or use. Provided at no cost to the employee. 4 Program Administrator Fit Testing Annual QLFT or QNFT for all tight-fitting facepieces, using the exact make/model the worker will wear. 5 Employee + Supervisor Proper Use Seal check before each use. No facial hair on tight-fitting respirators.
