EMERGENCY ACTION
PLAN (EAP) TEMPLATE
An Emergency Action Plan (EAP) is a written document that clearly explains what actions must be taken
during workplace emergencies to protect people, property, and the environment. It provides
step-by-step guidance on how to respond to incidents such as fires, chemical spills, medical
emergencies, explosions, natural disasters, or toxic releases.
In many regions, EAPs are also a regulatory requirement under workplace safety laws, such as those
enforced by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN (EAP) TEMPLATE
Key reasons organizations implement an EAP include:
Protecting employees and visitors by reducing injuries and fatalities
Minimising damage to facilities, equipment, and the environment
Ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations
Improving preparedness through training and drills
Supporting chemical safety by linking emergency response to Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
Maintaining business continuity after incidents
An Emergency Action Plan is designed for everyone in the workplace, but with different levels of
responsibility:
Employees – to understand alarms, evacuation routes, shelter-in-place actions, and safe
behaviour during emergencies
Supervisors and Managers – to lead evacuations, account for personnel, and coordinate
response efforts
Emergency Coordinators and EHS Teams – to manage incidents, communicate with
authorities, and oversee response actions
Contractors and Visitors – to follow site-specific emergency procedures while on the premises
Organizations handling chemicals or hazardous materials – where quick access to
SDS information and controlled response is essential
