SECTION 2: Hazards identification

OSHA HMIS  Emergency Overview  H 3 Ammonium bifluoride exists as white, odorless crystals. It is highly toxic; locally because of its F 0 corrosive action and systemically because of its conversion to hydrogen fluoride and fluoride ion R 0 absorption. Fluoride ion is a direct cellular poison which interferes with calcium and magnesium balances. Chronic exposure can result in fluorosis (see below). It is noncombustible. Exposure to PPE† moisture forms hydrofluoric acid which is capable of etching glass, cement, and many metals. †Sec. 8

Principle Routes of Exposure

Inhalation, skin and eye contact, ingestion Target Organs: Eye, skin, teeth and bones, kidneys, central nervous system (CNS).

Precautionary statements

P260 Do not breathe dust or mist. P264 Wash skin thoroughly after handling. P270 Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product. P280 Wear protective gloves/ protective clothing/ eye protection/ face protection. P301 + P310 IF SWALLOWED: Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician. P301 + P330 + P331 IF SWALLOWED: rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. 2 P303 + P361 + P353 IF ON SKIN (or hair): Remove/ Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with water/ shower. P304 + P340 IF INHALED: Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing. P305 + P351 + P338 IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. P310 Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/ physician. P321 Specific treatment (see supplemental first aid instructions on this label). P363 Wash contaminated clothing before reuse. P405 Store locked up. P501 Dispose of contents/ container to an approved waste disposal plant.

2.3 Other hazards

- none Acute Effects Inhalation: May cause irritation (possibly severe) of the respiratory tract. Respiratory stimulation occurs first, followed by depressed respirations. Death may occur from respiratory paralysis. Eye: Direct contact can cause corrosive ocular burns. Skin: Contact is irritating and may cause an unusual, large, pustular skin rash that appears similar to ballooning of the skin. If skin is moist, formation of hydrofluoric acid can cause serious burns. These burns do not appear serious at first, but may penetrate all the way to the bone. Ingestion: Symptoms include digestive tract irritation or corrosion, nausea and vomiting (possibly bloody), bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, muscle weakness and spasms, dehydration, convulsions, progressive CNS depression (fatigue, coma, and respiratory arrest, even in absence of circulatory failure), cardiac arrythmias, and excessive potassium and calcium in the blood.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure

Kidney or bone disorders

Potential chronic health

Repeated or prolonged exposure to and absorption of the fluoride ion can cause kidney damage as well as fluorosis (brittle bones, calcified ligaments, and anemia).

2.1 Classification of the substance or mixture

Acute toxicity, Oral (Category 3), H301 Skin corrosion (Category 1B), H314
