2.3 Other hazards
Signs and Symptoms of Potential Overexposure: Can evolve irritating and/or sensitizing vapor when heated. Hot liquid can react vigorously with water generating CO2. This product contains diisocyanates. Vapors or mists at excessive levels can irritate the mucous membranes causing respiratory irritation, shortness of breath, discomfort, fever and reduced lung function. Overexposures may lead to bronchitis, bronchial spasm and fluid in the lungs. These symptoms can be delayed up to several hours after exposure. Skin contact with diisocyanates may cause allergic reaction and skin irritation. Eye contact may cause severe irritation, including excess redness and swelling of the conjunctiva. Ingestion may cause abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, but is not a likely primary route of exposure. Individuals sensitized from prior contact to diisocyanates may react to levels below the exposure limit, with symptoms similar to those previously listed.
Principle Routes of Exposure
Skin contact and absorption, eye contact, ingestion, inhalation.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure
Skin allergies Skin disease including eczema and sensitization Other possible symptoms include; wheezing and coughing due to pulmonary edema (fluid build-up in lungs). Respiratory disease including asthma and bronchitis Irritation may be delayed for several hours. Persons with pre-existing skin or respiratory conditions (i.e., bronchitis, asthma, emphysema) may be at increased risk from exposure to this material. Persons who have been previously sensitized to diisocyanates may react to levels well below exposure limits.
