SECTION 2: Hazards identification
IDENTIFICATION General: No toxicity information is available on this specific preparation; this
Health hazards
assessment is based on information that is available on the properties of its components. Emergency Overview: Appearance: Amber liquid; Aromatic odor CAUSES EYE BURNS. MAY CAUSE SKIN IRRITATION. REPEATED/PROLONGED CONTACT MAY CAUSE SEVERE SKIN IRRITATION. COMBUSTIBLE LIQUID. INHALATION OR INGESTION MAY CAUSE MUCOUS MEMBRANE IRRITATION. MAY BE HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED.
Principle Routes of Exposure
Eye contact; Skin contact; Inhalation 3 3 HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION (Cont.) (Cont.) Symptoms of Overexposure (Acute & Chronic): Eye contact: This material will probably cause burns to human eyes following contact. Skin contact: Short contact periods with human skin can result in skin irritation. Repeated contact can result in skin burns. Prolonged contact can result in skin burns. Systemically toxic concentrations of this product will probably not be absorbed through human skin. Xylene in liquid form is readily absorbed through the skin, but absorption of xylene vapors through the skin is negligible. Inhalation: Inhalation of this material will probably cause irritation to respiratory passages. Systemic toxic effects are likely to develop following exposure to high concentrations. At high concentrations, vapors or aerosols of xylene can induce respiratory and central nervous system depression (e.g. drowsiness, dizziness, loss of coordination and fatigue), headache, gastrointestinal disturbances, and mucous membrane irritation of eyes, nose, throat and respiratory passages. Ingestion: In humans, irritation of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus and stomach can develop following ingestion of this product. This material may be harmful if swallowed. Small amounts of the hydrocarbon solvent aspirated into the lungs during ingestion or subsequent vomiting, may induce severe lung injury which may result in pneumonia, coma, and death. Ingestion of 2-ethylhexanol will probably cause headache, dizziness, central nervous system depression, and gastrointestinal disturbance. Animal studies have shown that 2-ethylhexanol can cause liver and kidney damage. ______________________________________________________________________________ 4 4 FIRST
