Health hazards
Material reacts with water or moisture in the eyes, skin and mucous membranes to generate n-Butyl alcohol. Butyl alcohol is metabolized to Butanic acid and 3-Hydroxy-butanoic acid. These substances are metabolized to Acetoacetic acid (3-Ketobutanoic acid) and acetone which may result in ketosis or ketoacidosis, respiratory depression, coma and possibly death. n-Butyl alcohol may have a narcotic effect when ingested or inhaled in sufficient quantities. The symptoms of exposure may be irriation of the nose and eyes, flushed face and sensation of heat, excitability, talkativeness, intoxication, staggering and lack of coordination, headache, mental confusion, drowsiness, stupor, loss of conscienceness, coma and death. Comments - EPA has expressed concern regarding the possible adverse effects resulting from the inhalation of alkoxysilanes and has recommended that administrative and mechanical means be used to minimize exposures.
