SECTION 2: Hazards identification
Emergency Overview Fine white to off white powder, will burn but does not ignite easily in bulk. Releases toxic gases in fire. Avoid contact with steam and temperatures over 100°C to prevent reversion to monomer. Do not breathe dust. Avoid skin contact. Handle only with impervious gloves. Exercise good hygiene practice when using. Do not eat, smoke, or drink without washing first. Some individuals may be sensitive to extremely low levels of TDI contained in the product. Read entire MSDS before using. The following rating is subjective. It is provided as a quick hazard guide only. Read the entire MSDS before using the product. Hazard Rating System: Health Flammability Reactivity Incompatibility PPE NFPA: 3 1 None F HMIS: 2* 1 ---- F 0 = minimal, 1 = slight, 2 = moderate, 3 = serious, 4 = severe, *chronic health hazard
Potential health effects
Signs, and Symptoms of Exposure
Principle Routes of Exposure
Inhalation. Eye and skin contact with dust. Ingestion is not expected. Human Effects and Symptoms of Overexposure: The information listed is for TDI and product dust. Product with no residual TDI is essentially innocuous at ambient temperature. The health effects referred to throughout are for residual TDI and product converted back to TDI at elevated temperatures. Acute Inhalation: TDI vapors or mist at concentrations above the TLV can irritate the mucous membranes in the respiratory tract causing runny nose, sore throat, coughing, chest discomfort, shortness of breath and reduced lung function (breathing obstruction). Persons with preexisting, nonspecific bronchial hyper-reactivity can respond to concentrations below the TLV with similar symptoms as well as asthma attack. Exposure well above the TLV may lead to bronchitis, bronchial spasm and pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs). These effects are usually reversible. Chemical or hypersensitive pneumonitis, with flu-like symptoms (e.g., fever, chills), has also been reported. These symptoms can be delayed up to several hours after exposure. Chronic Inhalation: As a result of previous repeated overexposures or a single large dose, certain individuals may develop isocyanate sensitization (chemical asthma) which will cause them to react to a later exposure to isocyanate at levels well below the TLV. These symptoms can include chest tightness, wheezing, cough, and shortness of breath or asthmatic attack. Reports indicate that once sensitized, an individual can experience these symptoms upon exposure to dust, cold air or other irritants. Sensitization can either be temporary or permanent. Acute Skin Contact: Isocyanates react with skin protein and moisture and can cause irritation which may include the following symptoms: reddening, swelling, rash, scaling, or blistering. Chronic Skin Contact: Prolonged contact can cause reddening, swelling, rash, scaling, blistering, and, in some cases, skin sensitization. Individuals who have developed a skin sensitization can develop these symptoms as a result of contact with very small amounts of liquid material or as a result of exposure to vapor. Acute Eye Contact: Vapors from TDI are severely irritating and can cause pain, tearing, reddening, and swelling. If left untreated, corneal damage can occur and injury is slow to heal. However, damage is usually reversible. The product dust is a mechanical irritant. See Section 4 for treatment. Chronic Eye Contact: Prolonged vapor contact may cause conjunctivitis. Acute Ingestion: Product has not been evaluated for this, but is not likely to cause symptoms if relatively small amounts have been ingested. See a physician immediately, taking the MSDS. Chronic Ingestion: None known. Carcinogenicity: No carcinogenic activity was observed in lifetime inhalation studies in rats and mice (International Isocyanate Institute). NTP: 2,4-Touene Diisocyanate (TDI): Classified as an NTP Anticipated Human Carcinogen – “Substances or groups of substances, and medical treatments which may reasonably be anticipated to be carcinogens.: IARC: 2,4-Toluene Diisocyanate (TDI): Classified as IARC Possible Human Carcinogen(Group 2B) – “The chemical or group of chemicals is possibly carcinogenic for humans.” OSHA: Not regulated.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure
Asthma, other respiratory disorders (bronchitis, emphysema, bronchial hyper-reactivity), skin allergies, eczema. Exposure Limits: Not established for the product. See exposure limits for 2,4-Toluene Diisocyanate (TDI) in Section 2.
