SECTION 2: Hazards identification
Emergency Overview Physical State @20°C liquid To viscous Color brown dark green or dark brown Odor Characteristic, Hydrocarbon-like, black Rotten-egg like. Strong concentrations of hydrogen sulphide may numb the sense of smell Extremely flammable liquid and vapor. May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways. Causes serious eye irritation. May cause drowsiness or dizziness. May cause genetic defects. May cause cancer. May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure. Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.
2.1 Classification of the substance or mixture
Flammable liquids - Category 1 Aspiration toxicity - Category 1 Serious eye damage/eye irritation - Category 2 Germ Cell Mutagenicity - Category 1B Carcinogenicity - Category 1B Specific target organ systemic toxicity (single exposure) - Category 3 Specific target organ systemic toxicity (repeated exposure) - Category 2 Chronic aquatic toxicity - Category 2

Hazard statements
H224 - Extremely flammable liquid and vapor H304 - May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways H319 - Causes serious eye irritation H336 - May cause drowsiness or dizziness H340 - May cause genetic defects H350 - May cause cancer H373 - May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure H411 - Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects
Prevention
Obtain special instructions before use • Do not handle until all safety precautions have been read and understood • Do not breathe dust/fume/gas/mist/vapors/spray • Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection • Wash face, hands and any exposed skin thoroughly after handling • Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area • Avoid release to the environment • Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources. No smoking • Keep container tightly closed • Use explosion-proof electrical/ ventilating / lighting equipment • Ground/bond container and receiving equipment • Use only non-sparking tools • Take precautionary measures against static discharge • Keep cool
Response
IF exposed or concerned: Get medical advice/attention • Get medical advice/attention if you feel unwell • IF INHALED: Remove person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing • Call a POISON CENTER/doctor if you feel unwell • IF ON SKIN (or hair): Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with water/ shower • IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing • If eye irritation persists: Get medical advice/attention • IF SWALLOWED: Immediately call a POISON CENTER/doctor • Do NOT induce vomiting • In case of fire: Use dry sand, dry chemical or alcohol-resistant foam to extinguish • Collect spillage
Storage
Store locked up • Store in a well-ventilated place. Keep container tightly closed
Precautionary statements
Disposal • Dispose of contents/ container to an approved waste disposal plant
Other physicochemical hazards
Flammable liquids
Health hazards
Inhalation Risk of hydrogen sulphide intoxication (H2S). H2S can also paralyse the olfactory system (150 - 200 ppm), making it inadvisable to rely on detecting its odor as a warning of its presence. Vapors inhaled in strong concentration have a narcotic effect on the central nervous system. Skin contact Samples of the substance have been tested in skin irritation studies. There was no evidence of skin corrosion. Prolonged or repeated contact may dry skin and cause irritation. Risk of burns ( if the product is hot). Eye contact Causes serious eye irritation. If the liquid is splashed into the eye, it can cause reversible irritation and damage. Vapor may cause irritation. Risk of burns ( if the product is hot). Ingestion May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways. If swallowed accidentally, the product may enter the lungs due to its low viscosity and lead to the rapid development of very serious pulmonary lesions (medical survey during 48 hours). Aspiration may cause pulmonary edema and pneumonitis. Crude oil may be classified harmful owing to the aspiration hazard where their vicosities are 20.5 mm2/s or less at 40°C. In this case, the product may enter the lungs and lead to the rapid development of very serious pulmonary lesions that may appear in the following hours. Skin corrosion/irritation Not classified based on available data. Serious eye damage/eye irritation Causes serious eye irritation. Sensitization Not classified based on available data. Carcinogenicity May cause cancer. Germ Cell Mutagenicity May cause genetic defects. Reproductive toxicity Not classified based on available data. Results of guideline developmental toxicity studies on the substance and OECD developmental toxicity screening studies showed no evidence of developmental toxicity in rats. The substance can contain amounts of toluene and/or n-hexane constituents that are known to be potential reprotoxicants. Target Organ Effects (STOT) Spleen, Blood, Liver, Thymus. STOT - single exposure Vapors may cause drowsiness and dizziness. STOT - repeated exposure May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure.
Aspiration hazard
May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways. The fluid can enter the lungs and cause damage (chemical pneumonitis, potentially fatal).
Environmental hazards
Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.
2.3 Other hazards
Contains hydrogen sulfide, an extremely flammable gas which can form explosive mixtures with air. Corrosive Gas. Friction generated by product discharge can create static charges of sufficient magnitude to cause SPARKS WHICH MAY LEAD TO FIRE OR EXPLOSION. Risk of hydrogen sulphide intoxication (H2S). Hydrogen sulfide, present in trace amounts, is a posionous gas with the smell of rotten eggs. After a period of exposure, the smell disappears due to olfactory fatigue. Anesthesia of the sense of smell > 100 ppm. Hydrogen sulphide can accumulate in the head space of storage tanks containing this product and can reach potentially hazardous concentrations. Contact with hot product will cause thermal burns. Should not be released into the environment.
