Section 2
SECTION 2: Hazards identification
Emergency Overview Physical State @20°C liquid Color colorless Odor Petroleum solvent Flammable liquid and vapor. May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways. Vapors inhaled in strong concentration have a narcotic effect on the central nervous system. Inhalation of high concentrations of vapor or aerosols may cause irritation of the upper respiratory tract. Ingestion may cause gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May emit toxic fumes under fire conditions. Incomplete combustion and thermolysis may produce gases of varying toxicity such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, various hydrocarbons, aldehydes and soot.
2.1 Classification of the substance or mixture
Flammable liquids - Category 3 Aspiration toxicity - Category 1 Specific target organ systemic toxicity (single exposure) - Category 3
Signal word
DANGER
Hazard statements
H226 - Flammable liquid and vapor H304 - May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways H336 - May cause drowsiness or dizziness
Prevention
Avoid breathing dust/fume/gas/mist/vapors/spray • Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area • Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources. No smoking • Keep container tightly closed • Use explosion-proof electrical/ ventilating / lighting equipment • Ground/bond container and receiving equipment • Use only non-sparking tools • Take precautionary measures against static discharge • Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection
Response
IF INHALED: Remove person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing • Call a POISON CENTER/doctor if you feel unwell • IF ON SKIN (or hair): Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with water/ shower • IF SWALLOWED: Immediately call a POISON CENTER/doctor • Do NOT induce vomiting • In case of fire: Use dry sand, dry chemical or alcohol-resistant foam to extinguish
Storage
Store locked up • Store in a well-ventilated place. Keep cool • Store in a well-ventilated place. Keep container tightly closed
Precautionary statements
Disposal • Dispose of contents/ container to an approved waste disposal plant
Other physicochemical hazards
Flammable liquids
Health hazards
Inhalation Vapors may cause drowsiness and dizziness. May cause irritation. Inhalation of vapours may cause headache, nausea, vomiting and an altered state of consciousness. Skin contact Redness. Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking. Eye contact Contact with eyes may cause irritation. Ingestion If swallowed accidentally, the product may enter the lungs due to its low viscosity and lead to the rapid development of very serious pulmonary lesions (medical survey during 48 hours). Ingestion may cause gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May cause central nervous system depression. Skin corrosion/irritation Not classified based on available data. Serious eye damage/eye irritation Not classified based on available data. Sensitization Not classified as a sensitizer. Carcinogenicity This product is not classified carcinogenic. Mutagenic effects The mutagenic potential of the substance has been extensively studied in a range of in-vivo and in-vitro assays. Germ Cell Mutagenicity Genetic toxicity : negative. Reproductive toxicity Not classified based on available data. Developmental Toxicity Results of guideline developmental toxicity studies on the substance and OECD developmental toxicity screening studies showed no evidence of developmental toxicity in rats. STOT - single exposure Vapors may cause drowsiness and dizziness. STOT - repeated exposure Not classified based on available data.
Aspiration hazard
May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways. The fluid can enter the lungs and cause damage (chemical pneumonitis, potentially fatal).
Environmental hazards
Not classified based on available data.
2.3 Other hazards
Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. Vapours are heavier than air and may spread near ground level to sources of ignition . Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking.
