Section 2

SECTION 2: Hazards identification

Emergency Overview Physical State @20°C liquid Color colorless Odor Odorless May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways. The inhalation of vapours or aerosols may be irritating for the respiratory tract and for mucous membranes. Vapors inhaled in strong concentration have a narcotic effect on the central nervous system. If swallowed accidentally, the product may enter the lungs due to its low viscosity and lead to the rapid development of very serious pulmonary lesions (medical survey during 48 hours). Ingestion may cause gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Incomplete combustion and thermolysis may produce gases of varying toxicity such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, various hydrocarbons, aldehydes and soot. These may be highly dangerous if inhaled in confined spaces or at high concentration.

2.1 Classification of the substance or mixture

Health hazards

Inhalation The inhalation of vapours or aerosols may be irritating for the respiratory tract and for mucous membranes. Vapors inhaled in strong concentration have a narcotic effect on the central nervous system. Skin contact Non-irritating during normal use. Eye contact Burning feeling and temporary redness. Ingestion If swallowed accidentally, the product may enter the lungs due to its low viscosity and lead to the rapid development of very serious pulmonary lesions (medical survey during 48 hours). Ingestion may cause gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, Abdominal pain. Skin corrosion/irritation Not classified based on available data. Serious eye damage/eye irritation Not classified based on available data. Sensitization Tests with the substance showed no evidence of skin sensitisation. There are no reports available to indicate that the substance has the potential to cause respiratory sensitisation. Carcinogenicity The carcinogenic potential of the substance has been investigated. The current toxicological knowledge allows to not classify the product as a carcinogen. Germ Cell Mutagenicity The mutagenic potential of the substance has been extensively studied in a range of in-vivo and in-vitro assays. The majority of the studies showed no evidence of mutagenic activity. Reproductive toxicity Studies in rats with the substance did not show any effect on reproductive performance. Developmental Toxicity Results of guideline developmental toxicity studies on the substance and OECD developmental toxicity screening studies showed no evidence of developmental toxicity in rats. Subchronic toxicity No information available. Target Organ Effects (STOT) None known. STOT - single exposure Not classified based on available data. STOT - repeated exposure Not classified based on available data.

Aspiration hazard

May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways. The fluid can enter the lungs and cause damage (chemical pneumonitis, potentially fatal).

Environmental hazards

Not classified based on available data.

2.3 Other hazards

Contaminated surfaces will be extremely slippery. If swallowed accidentally, the product may enter the lungs due to its low viscosity and lead to the rapid development of very serious pulmonary lesions (medical survey during 48 hours).
