SECTION 2: Hazards identification

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW IMMEDIATE CONCERNS: Product generates methanol, a flammable vapor, upon contact with water or humid air. Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin.

Potential health effects

EYES: Direct eye contact and vapors may cause eye irritation. SKIN: Direct contact with uncured product or its vapor may cause slight irritation to skin. INGESTION: May be harmful if swallowed. Ingestion is an unlikely route of entry in industrial uses. INHALATION: Vapors are irritating to the respiratory tract. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF OVEREXPOSURE INHALATION: Methanol- Symptoms of overexposure to methanol may include stomach or intestinal upset, nose, throat, and respiratory tract irritation, central nervous system depression, cyanosis, visual impairment, coma, and death. ACUTE TOXICITY: Methanol- Overexposure to methanol has been suggested to cause liver abnormalities and central nervous system damage in laboratory animals. Overexposure has been suggested to cause visual impairment in humans. REPRODUCTIVE TOXICITY REPRODUCTIVE EFFECTS: Methanol- has been found to cause birth defects in laboratory animals when inhaled at extremely high vapor concentrations. The relevance to humans is uncertain. IRRITANCY: Calcium carbonate- Overexposure to calcium carbonate may result in irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Acute ingestion may result in mild gastrointestinal distress while chronic exposure may result in hypercalcemia, alkalosis, and renal impairment. Approximately 70-80% of inhaled calcium carbonate was retained in the lungs. Animals studies suggest that inhalation of calcium carbonate dusts may enhance susceptibility to respiratory infection. Exposure to calcium carbonate dust is unlikely due to product matrix.
