DATA (cont. ) _ CARCINOGENICITY~ DATA (cont.) me ee wee ee ee contact. INHALATION: Vapors and aerosols at concentrations above the TLV can irritate the mucous membranes in the respiratory tract cauging runny nose, sore throat, coughing, chest discom- fort, shortneas of breath and reduced lung function. Persons with a preexisting, nonspecific bronchial hyper- activity can respond to concentrations below the TLV with Similar symptoms as well as asthma attack. Exposure well above the TLV may lead to bronchitis, bronchial spasm and pulmonary edema (fluid in lungs). These effects are usually reversible. MDI can induce respiratory sensitiza- tion with aathma-like symptoms similar to those induced by TDI (toluene diisocyante). Symptoms include chronic cough, tightness of chest with difficulty in breathing. These symptoma may be immediate or delayed up to several hours after exposure. Chronic overexposures may result in decreases in lung function which may be permanent. Sensit- ization can either be temporary or permanent. INGESTION: Irritation of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, and stomach can develop following ingestion. -FIRST ATD SKIN; Remove contaminated clothing. Waah affected skin thoroughly with soap and water. Wash contaminated clothing thoroughiy hefore reuse. For severe exposures, get under safety shower after removing clothing, then get medical attention. For lesser exposures, seek medical attention if irritation develops or persists after area is washed. -PIRST AID EYES: Flush eyes with copious amount of water, preferably lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes, holding eyelids open all the time. Refer individual to physician or ophthalmologist for immediate follow-up. FIRST AID INHALATION: Move to area free from risk of further exposure. Administer oxygen or artificial respiration as needed, Obtain medical attention. Asthmatic-type symptoms may develop and may be im- mediate or delayed up to several hours. Consult physician should this occur. “FIRST AID INGESTION: DO NOT induce vomiting. Give 1 to @ cups of milk cr water to drink. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. The reaction with water is very slow under 50 ¢, but is accelerated at higher temperatures and in the presence of alkalies, tertiary amines, and metal compounds. Some reactions can be violent. -CONDITIONS TO AVOID: Avoid extremes in temperature. Avoid moisture contamination. If container is exposed to high heat, 400 F (204 C), it can be pressurized and possibly rupture. Hazardous polymerization may eccur upon reaction with water at high temperatures or in the presence of alkalies, tertiary amines, and metal compounds. -HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS: By high heat and fire: Carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, traces of HCN, MDI vapors or aerosols. Transfer to unsealed waste container. Transport to well vent- ilated area and treat with neutralizing solution. ~LARGE SPILLS: , Evacuate and ventilate spill area; dike spill to prevent entry into water system; wear full protective equipment, including reapiratory equipment during clean-up. If temporary control of isocyanate vapor is required, a blanket of protein foam (avail- able from most fire departments) may be placed over the spill. Large quantities may be pumped into closed, but not sealed, containers for disposal. Absorb isocyanates with sawdust or other suitable absorbent, shovel into suitable unsealed con- tainers, transport to well-ventilated area (outside) and treat with neutralizing solution: mixture of water (80%) with non- ionic surfactant Tergitol TMN-10 (20%), or; water (90%), conc- entrated ammonia (3-8%) and detergent (2%). Add about 10 parts of neutralizer per part of isocyanate, with mixing. Allow to stand uncovered for 48 hours to let CO2 escape. Clean-up: Decon- taminate floor with decontamination solution letting stand for at least 15 minutes. Avoid use of water; product is highly toxic to aquatic life. This product meets the definition of a marine pollutant as designated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). ey Ce J ACAI SH | ATPEG TL TE fGtpl FaAT St? Incineration is the preferred method. Empty containers must be handled with care due to product residue. Decontaminate containers prior to disposal. Empty deccntaminated containers should be crushed to prevent reuse. DO NOT HEAT OR CUT EMPTY CONTAINER WITH ELECTRIC OR GAS TORCH; gases evolved may be highly toxic. SECTION VIII - SPECIAL PROTECTION & OTHER PRECAUTIONS ae ee HR RO me em ee re - VENTILATION Local exhaust should he used to maintain levels below the TLV whenever MDI is processed, heated or spray applied. Standard reference sources regarding industrial ventilation {ie., ACGIH Industrial Ventilation) should be consulted for guidance about adequate ventilation. -RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: Because of the low vapor pressure, ventilation is usually suf- ficient to keep vapors below the TLV at room temperature. How- ever, an air-supplied respirator must be worn during spray applications, during long-term (over 1 hour) exposures when product is heated or in environments of high concentrations well above the TLV of 0.005 ppm. For short-term (less than 1 hour) emergency situations at concentrationa near the TLV, an air- purifying respirator equipped with organic filter cartridges or canistera and dust filters can be used. However, due to the poor warning properties of MDI, proper fit and timely replace- ment of filter elementa must be ensured. Observe

TO BE TAKEN IN HANDLING AND STORAGE STORAGE TEMPERATURE (MIN/MAX): 70 F (21 €)/35 F (35 C) AVERAGE SHELF LIFE 6 Months SPECIAL SENSITIVITY: If container is exposed to high heat, 400 F {204 C) it can be pressurized and possibly rupture. MDI reacts slowly with water to form CO2 gas. This gas can cause sealed containers to expand and possibly rupture. TO BE TAKEN , IN HANDLING AND STORING: Store in tightly closed containers te prevent moisture contamination. Do net reseal if contamination is suspected. . Avoid contact with eyea and skin.
