SECTION 2: Hazards identification
OSHA EMERGENCY OVERVIEW IMMEDIATE CONCERNS: DANGER! Poison. Flammable. Vapor harmful. May be fatal or cause blindness if swallowed. Avoid prolonged breathing of vapors. Avoid contact with eyes and skin.
Potential health effects
EYES: Liquid is moderately irritating to the eyes. High vapor concentrations may also be irritating. Direct contact with the liquid or exposure to its vapors or mists may cause stinging, tearing, redness, swelling and eye damage. SKIN: Liquid is mildly irritating to the skin. Prolonged or repeated contact can result in defatting and drying of the skin which may result in skin irritation and dermatitis (rash). INGESTION: Ingestion of product may result in vomiting; aspiration (breathing) of vomitus into the lungs must be avoided as even small quantities may result in aspiration pneumonitis. INHALATION: May cause mild irritation to the nose, throat and respiratory tract and may result in central nervous system (CNS) depression. Excessive exposure to this product may cause headache, CNS depression, drowsiness, dizziness, loss of appetite, irritation of the respiratory tract, drunkeness, unconsciousness, or death. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF OVEREXPOSURE ACUTE TOXICITY: Shortness of breathing, confused behavior, redness of skin, swelling of tissues, watery eyes, and nausea. Irritation as noted above. Early to moderate CNS depression may be evidenced by giddiness, headache, dizziness, and nausea; in extreme cases, unconsciousness and death may occur. Aspiration pneumonitis may be evidenced by coughing, labored breathing and cyanosis.
Potential chronic health
Laboratory studies have shown that petroleum distillates may cause kidney, liver, or lung damage. Reports have associated repeated and prolonged overexposure to solvents with permanent brain and nervous system damage. Not listed as a carcinogen by the NTP, IARC, or OSHA. DA 2D
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure
Preexisting diseases in or history of ailments involving skin, central nervous system, liver and kidney. COMMENTS HEALTH: Can cause optic nerve damage (blindness).
