SECTION 2: Hazards identification
Identification: TOLUENE FLAMMABLE LIQUID AND VAPOR. Liquid can accumulate static charge by flow or agitation. Vapor is heavier than air and may spread long distances. Distant ignition and flashback are possible. Liquid can float on water and may travel to distant locations and/or spread fire. Can decompose at high temperatures forming toxic gases. Closed containers may rupture and explode in heat of fire. Mild central nervous system depressant. Vapor may cause headache, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, confusion and incoordination. SKIN IRRITANT. Causes moderate skin irritation. Aspiration hazard. Swallowing or vomiting of the liquid may result in aspiration into the lungs. POSSIBLE TERATOGEN/EMBRYOTOXIN - may harm the unborn child, based on animal information. Confined space hazard. Can accumulate in confined spaces, producing a fire and toxicity hazard. PENTANE EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE, HIGHLY VOLATILE LIQUID. Can accumulate static charge. Vapor is heavier than air and may spread long distances and will accumulate at low points (e.g. open or closed drains). Liquid can float on water and may travel to distant locations or spread fire. Distant ignition and flashback are possible. Essentially non-toxic below the lower explosive limit. Can accumulate in confined spaces, resulting in a fire and toxicity hazard. Asphyxiant. Very high vapor concentrations can displace oxygen in the air, especially in a confined space, and could result in life-threatening asphyxiation (suffocation). Aspiration hazard. Swallowing or vomiting of the liquid may result in aspiration (breathing) into the lungs. NOTE: Some grades of n-pentane may contain benzene, which is carcinogenic. If benzene is present in n-pentane at a concentration of more than 0.1%, the mixture is considered carcinogenic. For more information, refer to the CHEMINFO review of benzene. GHS LABELING SYMBOLS:

Hazard statements
Causes skin and eye irritation. Extremely flammable liquid and vapor. Harmful if swallowed. May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways. Highly flammable liquid and vapor. May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways. May cause damage to organs (Central nervous system) through prolonged or repeated exposure. May cause drowsiness or dizziness. Static accumulating flammable liquid can become electrostatically charged even in bonded and grounded equipment. Suspected of damaging fertility or the unborn child. Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.
Precautionary statements
Obtain special instructions before use. Do not handle until all safety precautions have been read and understood. Keep away from heat/sparks/open flames/hot surfaces. - No smoking. Keep container tightly closed. Ground/bond container and receiving equipment. Use explosion-proof electrical/ventilating/lighting equipment. Use only non-sparking tools. Take precautionary measures against static discharges. Do not breathe gas/fumes/vapor/spray. Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection. Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. When using, do not eat, drink or smoke. Wash thoroughly after handling. Avoid release to the environment. IF SWALLOWED: Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/ physician. IF ON SKIN (or hair): Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with water/shower. IF INHALED: Remove person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing. Call a POISON CENTER or doctor/ physician if you feel unwell. IF exposed or concerned: Get medical advice/ attention. Do NOT induce vomiting. If skin irritation occurs: Get medical advice/ attention. Take off contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. In case of fire: Use dry sand, dry chemical or alcohol-resistant foam to extinguish. Store in a well-ventilated place. Keep container tightly closed. Keep cool. Store locked up. Collect spillage. Dispose of contents/ container to an approved waste disposal plant. For IATA Proper Shipping Name and identification, refer to Section 15 of this text. Please refer to Section 11 & 15 for Health Hazard information.
