WARNING
Section 2
SECTION 2: Hazards identification
2.1 EMERGENCY OVERVIEW Appearance: Gray to black solid material WARNING MAY CAUSE EYE AND RESPIRATORY TRACT IRRITATION AIRBORNE DUST PARTICLES MAY FORM EXPLOSIVE AIR-DUST MIXTURE The ingredients used in this product are encapsulated. Under the expected use conditions for processing, the encapsulated substances are not expected to pose a health hazard. Grinding, sawing, cutting, sanding or machining of materials made from this product may generate dust. This dust may contain crystalline silica which is classified as a cancer causing substance. Trace amounts of formaldehyde and/or phenol may be released during dust generating processes.
Principle Routes of Exposure
Inhalation, eye contact, skin contact Inhalation May cause irritation of the respiratory tract. Repeated exposure to graphite has been associated with the development of pneumoconiosis. Reports of lung injury caused by exposure to graphite have not distinguished between the form of the graphite (i.e., natural or synthetic) causing the injury; in addition, exposures to impurities, such as quartz silica, were involved in many of the reported cases. As sold, the graphite is encapsulated which is likely to reduce the potential for lung injury. This product may contain a small amount of crystalline silica that could be released if dust is generated during processing. Prolonged or repeated exposure to dusts containing crystalline silica may cause lung injury including silicosis. Crystalline silica has been classified by IARC as a known human carcinogen. Risk of injury depends on duration and level of exposure. Heating this product above 150 degrees C (302 degrees F) may result in the release of formaldehyde, ammonia or phenol vapors. Formaldehyde is irritating to the nose and throat and respiratory sensitization and is classified as a carcinogen by IARC. Eyes Dust or powder may cause irritation and/or inflammation to the eye tissue. Symptoms may include pain, redness, tearing and corneal abrasion. Formaldehyde, ammonia and phenol vapors can be irritating to the eyes. Skin Dust or powder may irritate the skin. May cause irritant or allergic dermatitis. Ingestion Ingestion of this product is unlikely, however, if ingested may cause gastrointestinal disturbances, abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure
Pre-existing respiratory disorders may be aggravated by exposure
Environmental effects
Not harmful See Section 11: TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION for further information.
