SECTION 2: Hazards identification
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW Appearance: Gray to black solid material CAUTION MAY CAUSE EYE AND RESPIRATORY TRACT IRRITATION The ingredients used in this product are encapsulated. Under the expected use conditions for processing the encapsulated substances are not expected to pose a health hazard. Grinding, sawing, cutting, sanding or machining of materials made from this product may require dust controls.
Principle Routes of Exposure
Inhalation, eyes, skin Inhalation May cause irritation to eyes and respiratory system. Repeated exposure to graphite has been associated with the development of pneumoconiosis. Reports of lung injury caused by exposure to graphite have not distinguished between the form of the graphite (i.e., natural or synthetic) causing the injury; in addition, exposures to impurities, such as quartz silica, were involved in many of the reported cases. As sold, the graphite is encapsulated which is likely to reduce the potential for lung injury. Eye Dust or powder may cause irritation and/or inflammation to the eye tissue. Symptoms may include pain, redness, tearing and corneal abrasion. Skin Dust or powder may irritate the skin. Ingestion Ingestion of this product is unlikely, however, if ingested may cause gastrointestinal disturbances.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure
Pre-existing respiratory disorders may be aggravated by exposure Target Organs Lungs
Environmental effects
Not harmful
2.3 Other hazards
Graphite is non-flammable in bulk form, but combustible when present as finely divided particles. Dust dispersed in air in sufficient concentrations and in the presence if an ignition source is an explosion hazard. See Section 11: TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION for further information.
