2.3 Other hazards
Depending on the type of handling and use (e.g. grinding, drying), airborne respirable crystalline silica (quartz - cristobalite) may be generated. Prolonged and/or massive inhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust may cause lung fibrosis, commonly referred to as silicosis. Principal symptoms of silicosis are cough and breathlessness. Occupational exposure to respirable crystalline silica dust should be monitored and controlled. HazCom classification of the bulk product as “Specific Target Organ Toxicant- Category 1” is warranted at >1% respirable crystalline silica (quartz or cristobalite), based on the primary effect in humans of the inhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust, silicosis.
2.1 Classification of the substance or mixture
SERIOUS EYE DAMAGE - Category 1 CARCINOGENICITY - Category 1 SPECIFIC TARGET ORGAN TOXICITY (SINGLE EXPOSURE) (Respiratory tract irritation) - Category 3
