Section 2

SECTION 2: Hazards identification

Emergency Overview: Colorless to yellow liquid with a strong, unpleasant fish-like odor. Flammable Liquid. Irritating to skin and eyes. (See Section 11 for detailed toxicological information.) Signs and Symptoms of Potential Overexposure: Pyridine is moderately to severely irritating to skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Vapors may be irritating to the respiratory tract. Pyridine is readily absorbed through the skin. Extended exposure (e.g. from saturated clothing) may lead to systemic poisoning. Symptoms may include headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, and other effects. Symptoms seen after inhalation overexposures are expected to be essentially the same as those listed previously. Ingestion of several ounces of pyridine has resulted in severe vomiting, diarrhea, high fever, delirium and death. Ingestion is not likely to be a primary route of exposure.

Principle Routes of Exposure

Skin contact and absorption, eye contact, and inhalation. Ingestion is not likely to be a primary route of exposure.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure

Persons with pre-existing skin, liver, or kidney disorders may be at increased risk from overexposure to this material. This is not likely to be a problem when appropriate procedures are used to minimize exposure.
