2.3 Other hazards
Zircon contains naturally radioactive elements belonging to the thorium and uraniun series. The zircon in REFRACOL 21Z includes these elements. Their concentration level is less than 500 ppm and their corresponding activity is 0,6 to 0,9 bq/gm for thorium 232 and 1,5 to 3,4 for uranium 238. The main risk linked to this products’ radioactivity is the possible internal exposure to breathable dust if the level of dusts exceeds 3,5 mg/m3 (which correspond to an annual exposure level exceeding 1 mSv). REFRACOL 21Z contains 50 to 60 % zircon. The product is presented as a paste and therefore does not generate any dust. There is also a risk of external exposure to gamma radiation. Continuous exposure (2000 hours per annum) less than 2 meters away from pure zircon results in an annual dose of 1 mSv. These figures may be compared to the average natural irradiation of the global population in France which reaches 2,4 mSv per year and per person. The pH of the product is higher than ceiling restrictions concerning dumping in surface water.
