2.3 Other hazards
The fibre cement products in their intact state do not present a hazard. However, one should be aware of the ill-effect and danger from prolonged exposure to the air-borne dust generated through cutting, drilling, routing, sawing and crushing of the fibre cement products. Acute Effects Skin contact: The dust from this product may cause irritation of the skin from friction but is not absorbed through the skin. Eye contact: The dust from this product may irritate the eyes causing watering and redness. Ingestion: Unlikely under normal conditions of use, but ingestion of the dust from this product may result in abdominal discomfort. Inhaled: The dust from this product may cause irritation of nose, throat and lungs causing coughing and sneezing.
Potential chronic health
Inhaled: Prolonged and continuous exposure (over a number of years) to significant, airborne, respirable dust levels containing crystalline silica may cause bronchitis, silicosis and lung cancer. Based on limited animal research, it is possible that repeated inhalation of cellulose fibre dust over time may lead to inflammation and scarring of the lung in humans.
