SECTION 2: Hazards identification
Main Hazards Oxidised bitumens are not classified for supply purposes but are classified as dangerous for conveyance if transported at elevated temperatures They contain very low concentrations of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH’s) which are not considered to be bioavailable under normal conditions of use. If however they are diluted such that it has a low viscosity at ambient temperatures PAH’s from the Bitumen may become bioavailable Exposure limits exist for bitumen fume (oil mist) and Hydrogen Sulphide which can be evolved by the decomposition of Sulphur compounds in bitumen at high temperatures Contact with hot material may cause severe thermal burns. Ingestion during handling is not likely.
