SECTION 2: Hazards identification
Emergency overview CAUSES RESPIRATORY TRACT, EYE AND SKIN IRRITATION. MAY CAUSE ALLERGIC RESPIRATORY OR SKIN REACTION. HARMFUL IF INHALED, ABSORBED THROUGH SKIN OR SWALLOWED.
Principle Routes of Exposure
Absorbed through skin. Eye contact. Inhalation. Ingestion.
Potential Acute Health Effects
Eyes : Causes eye irritation. Skin : May cause skin sensitization. May cause dermatitis. Causes skin irritation. May be absorbed through skin. Animal tests have indicated that respiratory sensitization can result from skin contact with diphenylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate. Inhalation : May be irritating to the respiratory system. Symptoms of exposure may include dryness of the throat, tightness of the chest and shortness of breath. May cause central nervous system depression, characterized by headache, dizziness, staggering gait, confusion, unconsciousness, coma. Isocyanates sensitive individuals may experience an allergic reaction with asthma-like symptoms. May cause respiratory sensitization. May cause lung damage. At high temperature applications, product may release vapours that may produce cyanosis in absence of sufficient ventilation or respiratory protection. Ingestion : Harmful if swallowed.
Potential chronic health

MUTAGENIC EFFECTS: Not available.
Teratogenic Effects
Not available DEVELOPMENTAL TOXICITY: Xylene can cause embryotoxic effects in laboratory animals. May cause damage to the liver and kidneys. Repeated or prolonged exposure may produce permanent central nervous system damage. May cause long-term lung damage. May affect the gastrointestinal system. May affect the blood and the blood forming organs. May cause dermatitis.
