SECTION 2: Hazards identification
Emergency overview FLAMMABLE LIQUID AND VAPOUR. MAY CAUSE ALLERGIC RESPIRATORY AND SKIN REACTION. HARMFUL IF INHALED, ABSORBED THROUGH SKIN OR SWALLOWED. CAUSES RESPIRATORY TRACT, EYE AND SKIN IRRITATION.
Principle Routes of Exposure
Absorbed through skin. Eye contact. Inhalation. Ingestion.
Potential Acute Health Effects
Eyes : Causes eye irritation. Skin : May cause skin sensitization. May cause dermatitis. Causes skin irritation. Animal tests have indicated that respiratory sensitization can result from skin contact with diphenylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate. Inhalation : May be irritating to the respiratory system. Symptoms of exposure may include dryness of the throat, tightness of the chest and shortness of breath. May cause central nervous system depression, characterized by headache, dizziness, staggering gait, confusion, unconsciousness, coma. Isocyanates sensitive individuals may experience an allergic reaction with asthma-like symptoms. May cause respiratory sensitization. May cause lung damage. At high temperature applications, product may release vapours that may produce cyanosis in absence of sufficient ventilation or respiratory protection. Ingestion : Harmful if swallowed.
Potential chronic health
CARCINOGENIC EFFECTS: Classified A4 (Not classifiable for human or animal.) by ACGIH, 3 (Not effects classifiable for human.) by IARC [xylene (o-,m-,p- isomers)]. Classified 2A (Probable for human.) by IARC, 2 (Reasonably Anticipated To Be Human Carcinogens.) by NTP [trichloroethylene]. Classified A5 (Not suspected for human.) by ACGIH [trichloroethylene]. Classified POSSIBLE, 2B (Possible for human.) by IARC [ethyl benzene]. Classified POSSIBLE, 2B (Possible for human.) by IARC [carbon black]. Classified A4 (Not classifiable for human or animal.) by ACGIH [carbon black]. Classified 3 (Not classifiable for human.) by IARC [isocyanic acid, polymethylene polyphenylene ester]. Classified 3 (Not classifiable for human.) by IARC [diphenylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate]. Classified 2B (Possible for human.) by IARC [1,2-epoxybutane]. MUTAGENIC EFFECTS: The ingredient benzene, 1,4-dinitroso-, homopolymer gave positive results for mutagenicity in an Ames Assay study while two other mutagenicity studies proved negative.
Teratogenic Effects
Not available DEVELOPMENTAL TOXICITY: Not available. May cause damage to the liver and kidneys. Repeated or prolonged exposure may produce permanent central nervous system damage. May cause long-term lung damage. May affect the gastrointestinal system. May affect the blood and the blood forming organs. May cause dermatitis. Medical conditions No additional information. aggravated by overexposure Over-exposure No additional information. signs/symptoms See toxicological Information (section 11)
