Section 2
SECTION 2: Hazards identification
Physical state : Gas. Odor : Odourless gas Emergency overview : DANGER! Toxic, corrosive high pressure gas. May be fatal if inhaled. May cause lung damage. Can cause eye and skin burns. Symptoms may be delayed. Vigorously accelerates combustion. Self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing must be worn by rescue workers Contains gas under pressure. In a fire or if heated, a pressure increase will occur and the container may burst or explode. Very toxic by inhalation. Do not puncture or incinerate container. Do not breathe gas. Do not get on skin or clothing. Avoid contact with eyes. Use only with adequate ventilation. Keep container tightly closed and sealed until ready for use.
Principle Routes of Exposure
Inhalation.
Potential Acute Health Effects
Inhalation : This material readily converts to nitrogen dioxide in air. Overexposure may cause irritation of mucous membranes, sinuses, pharynx, and bronchia, with pain, headache, cyanosis, irregular respiration, choking, dizziness, and possibly pulmonary edema. Often no pulmonary symptoms at time of exposure; may have latency of 5-72 hours. High vapour concentrations may cause pain, choking, bronchoconstriction, reflex slowing of the heart, and possibly asphyxiation. Lack of oxygen can cause death. Ingestion : As this product is a gas, refer to the inhalation section. Skin : Severe irritant; may cause burns. Eyes : May cause severe conjunctivitis seen as marked redness and swelling of the conjunctiva, and corneal injury with opacification Potential chronic health effects
Potential chronic health
Repeated inhalation may result in bronchitis or emphysema. Repeated skin contact may result in cumulative dermatitis. Carcinogenicity : No known significant effects or critical hazards. Mutagenicity : No known significant effects or critical hazards.
Teratogenic Effects
No known significant effects or critical hazards. Developmental effects : No known significant effects or critical hazards. Fertility effects : No known significant effects or critical hazards. Target organs : Contains material which may cause damage to the following organs: blood, lungs, mucous membranes, upper respiratory tract, skin, eyes, central nervous system (CNS), nose/sinuses, throat. Over-exposure signs/symptoms Inhalation : No specific data. Ingestion : No specific data. Skin : No specific data. Eyes : No specific data. Medical conditions aggravated by over- exposure : Inhalation may aggravate asthma and inflammatory or fibrotic pulmonary disease. Because of its irritating properties, this material may aggravate an existing dermatitis. See toxicological information (section 11)
