Response

P303+361+353 - IF ON SKIN (or hair): Remove/take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with water/shower. P301+310 - IF SWALLOWED: Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician. P331 - Do NOT induce vomiting. P302+352 - IF ON SKIN: Wash with plenty of soap and water. P332+313 - If skin irritation occurs, get medical advice/attention. P305+351+338 - IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. P337+313 - If eye irritation persists, get medical advice/attention. P304+340 - IF INHALED: Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing. P312 - Call a POISON CENTER/doctor/... if you feel unwell. P308+313 - IF exposed or concerned: Get medical attention/advice. P363 - Wash contaminated clothing before reuse. P301+330+331 - IF SWALLOWED: Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. P391 - Collect spillage. P301+312 - IF SWALLOWED: Call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician if you feel unwell. P330 - Rinse mouth.

Storage

P403+235 - Store in cool/well-ventilated place. P405 - Store locked up. P403+233 - Store container tightly closed in well-ventilated place. OSHA Regulatory Status: This material is classified as hazardous under OSHA regulations.

Potential health effects

Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. (Acute and Chronic): Inhalation or contact with material may irritate or burn skin and eyes. Prolonged or repeated eye contact may cause conjunctivitis. Workers chronically exposed to sulfuric acid mists may show various lesions of the skin, tracheobronchitis, stomatitis, conjunctivitis, or gastritis. Chronic exposure may cause corneal injury, optical neuritis, blurred vision, and possible cataract formation. Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause dermatitis. May cause anemia and other blood cell abnormalities. May cause liver and kidney damage. Animal studies have reported that fetal effects/abnormalities may occur when maternal toxicity is seen. Chronic inhalation, skin absorption or ingestion of naphthalene have caused severe hemolytic anemia. Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation. Chronic inhalation may cause effects similar to those of acute inhalation. Prolonged or repeated inhalation may cause nosebleeds, nasal congestion, erosion of the teeth, perforation of the nasal septum, chest pain and bronchitis. Effects may be delayed. Occupational exposure to strong inorganic acid mists containing sulfuric acid is carcinogenic to humans. Prolonged exposure may produce a narcotic effect. Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause nausea, dizziness, and headache. Chronic exposure may cause lung damage. Laboratory experiments have shown mutagenic effects. Inhalation: Inhalation of high concentrations may cause central nervous system effects characterized by nausea, headache, dizziness, unconsciousness and coma. Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation. May cause irritation of the respiratory tract with burning pain in the nose and throat, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and pulmonary edema. Causes chemical burns to the respiratory tract. Inhalation may be fatal as a result of spasm, inflammation, edema of the larynx and bronchi, chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary edema. Because its vapor pressure is negligible, it exists in the air only as a mist or spray. Exposure may impair lung function and cause mucostasis (reduced mucous clearance). May cause respiratory tract irritation. Aspiration may lead to pulmonary edema. Inhalation may lead to dizziness, weakness, and drowsiness, leading to stupor, unconsciousness, and even death. Inhalation at high concentrations may cause CNS depression and asphixiation. Harmful if inhaled. May cause drowsiness, unconsciousness, and central nervous system depression. Individuals exposed to a solvent containing a mixture of trimethylbenzenes have complained of nervousness, tension, anxiety, and asthmatic bronchitis. In addition, the peripheral blood showed a tendency to hypochromic anemia and a deviation from normal in the coagulability of the blood. Contamination of the solvent with benzene was probably responsible for the blood effects. Readily absorbed when inhaled. Material volatilizes at room temperature. Hemolytic anemia (destruction of red blood cells) is the primary healt h concern for humans exposed to naphthalene for either short or long p eriods of time. Other effects may include nausea, profuse perspiration , vomiting, kidney damage and liver damage. Optic neuritis (inflammati on of the optic nerve) has been observed. Cataracts have also occurred . Skin Contact: Causes skin irritation. Prolonged and/or repeated contact may cause irritation and/or dermatitis. Causes redness and pain. Causes skin burns. The severity of injury depends on the concentration of the solution and the duration of exposure. Incidence of skin hypersensitivity is not widespread in the general population &, based on the long history of use of naphthalene as a consumer product, this effect is mostly confined to industrial exposure where coal tar contamination may be present. Eye Contact: Causes severe eye irritation. Causes redness and pain. Causes severe eye burns. May cause blindness. May cause permanent corneal opacification. The severity of injury depends on the concentration of the solution and the duration of exposure. The vapor causes eye irritation at 15 ppm. Eye contact with the solid material may result in conjunctivitis, superficial injury to the cornea, diminished visual acuity, and other effects. It may cause cataracts. Ingestion:

Aspiration hazard

if swallowed - can enter lungs and cause damage May cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May cause central nervous system depression, characterized by excitement, followed by headache, dizziness, drowsiness, and nausea. Advanced stages may cause collapse, unconsciousness, coma and possible death due to respiratory failure. Aspiration of material into the lungs may cause chemical pneumonitis, which may be fatal. May cause severe and permanent damage to the digestive tract. Causes gastrointestinal tract burns. Harmful if swallowed. May cause liver and kidney damage. May cause methemoglobinemia, cyanosis (bluish discoloration of skin due to deficient oxygenation of the blood), convulsions, and death. May cause severe digestive tract irritation with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Ingestion of large quantities may cause severe hemolytic anemia and hemoglobinuria.
