2.3 Other hazards
Acute and Chronic): Chronic exposure may cause corneal injury, optical neuritis, blurred vision, and possible cataract formation. Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause dermatitis. May cause liver and kidney damage. May cause anemia and other blood cell abnormalities. Animal studies have reported that fetal effects/abnormalities may occur when maternal toxicity is seen. Chronic inhalation, skin absorption or ingestion of naphthalene have caused severe hemolytic anemia. Chronic: Effects may be delayed. Chronic exposure may cause lung damage. Laboratory experiments have shown mutagenic effects. Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause nausea, dizziness, and headache. Inhalation: Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation. Inhalation may lead to dizziness, weakness, and drowsiness, leading to stupor, unconsciousness, and even death. Inhalation at high concentrations may cause CNS depression and asphixiation. Harmful if inhaled. Causes respiratory tract irritation. Readily absorbed when inhaled. Material volatilizes at room temperature. Hemolytic anemia (destruction of red blood cells) is the primary healt h concern for humans exposed to naphthalene for either short or long p eriods of time. Other effects may include nausea, profuse perspiration , vomiting, kidney damage and liver damage. Optic neuritis (inflammati on of the optic nerve) has been observed. Cataracts have also occurred . May cause drowsiness, unconsciousness, and central nervous system depression. Individuals exposed to a solvent containing a mixture of trimethylbenzenes have complained of nervousness, tension, anxiety, and asthmatic bronchitis. In addition, the peripheral blood showed a tendency to hypochromic anemia and a deviation from normal in the coagulability of the blood. Material is extremely destructive to the tissue of the mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract. Skin: Harmful if absorbed through skin. Causes skin burns. Causes skin irritation. Skin Contact: Causes skin irritation. Prolonged and/or repeated contact may cause irritation and/or dermatitis. May be absorbed through the skin in harmful amounts. Incidence of skin hypersensitivity is not widespread in the general population &, based on the long history of use of naphthalene as a consumer product, this effect is mostly confined to industrial exposure where coal tar contamination may be present. Causes redness and pain. Eye Contact: The vapor causes eye irritation at 15 ppm. It may cause cataracts. Causes redness and pain. Causes eye burns. Causes severe eye irritation. Ingestion: May cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Aspiration of material into the lungs may cause chemical pneumonitis, which may be fatal. Harmful if swallowed. May cause liver and kidney damage. May cause methemoglobinemia, cyanosis (bluish discoloration of skin due to deficient oxygenation of the blood), convulsions, and death. May cause severe digestive tract irritation with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Ingestion of large quantities may cause severe hemolytic anemia and hemoglobinuria. May cause central nervous system depression. Causes eye burns.
