SECTION 2: Hazards identification
Health hazards
Emergency Overview : Dark gray, paste-like liquid. Slight odour. Warning! When heated above 150°C in air, may release formaldehyde gas. Harmful if inhaled. Causes eye irritation. May be harmful if swallowed. Ingestion of large amounts may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, as well as depression of the central nervous system. Harmful: danger of serious damage to health by prolonged exposure through inhalation. May cause allergic skin reaction. Possible cancer hazard - contains material which may cause cancer.
Potential health effects
Signs and symptoms of short-term (acute) exposure Inhalation : May cause irritation of the nose, throat, mucous membranes, and respiratory tract. If product is heated, inhalation of fumes released from product may cause ‘polymer fume fever’, a flu-like illness. Symptoms of ‘polymer fume fever’ may include fever, chills, headache, nausea and muscle pain. Avoid heating, which will result in the liberation of formaldehyde gas. Formaldehyde causes severe respiratory irritation, lung inflammation and pulmonary edema. Symptoms of pulmonary edema (chest pain, shortness of breath) may be delayed. Skin May cause skin irritation in susceptible persons. Eyes May cause severe eye irritation. May cause corneal damage. Avoid heating, which will result in the liberation of formaldehyde gas. Formaldehyde gas causes moderate to severe eye irritation. Ingestion Ingestion may cause gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Ingestion of large amounts may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, as well as depression of the central nervous system Effects of long-term (chronic) exposure : Harmful: danger of serious damage to health by prolonged exposure through inhalation. Effects of excessive exposures may include: Nausea; Vomiting; Cough; Headache; Cyanosis. Could result in pulmonary edema (fluid accumulation). Prolonged overexposure may cause liver and kidney effects. Carcinogenic status : Cancer hazard. See TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION, Section 11. Additional health hazards : Possible sensitizer. See TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION, Section 11.
