WHMIS Classification
Class B2 (Flammable Liquids) Class D1A (Materials Causing Immediate and Serious Toxic Effects, Very Toxic Material) Class D2A (Materials Causing Other Toxic Effects, Very Toxic Material) Class D2B (Materials Causing Other Toxic Effects, Toxic Material) OSHA: This material is classified as hazardous under OSHA regulations (29CFR 1910.1200). Flammable liquid
Health hazards
Emergency Overview Clear yellow liquid. Solvent odour. Warning! Flammable liquid and vapour. Causes skin and eye irritation. Harmful or fatal if inhaled. Causes respiratory tract irritation. May cause central nervous system depression. Could result in pulmonary edema (fluid accumulation). Harmful or fatal if swallowed. Can enter the lungs and cause damage. Contains material which may be a teratogen. May cause sensitization by inhalation and skin contact. May cause liver and kidney damage.
Potential health effects
Signs and symptoms of short-term (acute) exposure Inhalation : Inhalation of vapours in high concentration may cause irritation of respiratory system. May cause headache, nausea, drowsiness or other effects on the central nervous system. Extremely high exposures may lead to inflammation of lung tissue (chemical pneumonitis), chemical bronchitis and accumulation of fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema). Symptoms of pulmonary edema (chest pain, shortness of breath) may be delayed. Skin : Causes severe irritation. Prolonged or repeated contact may cause a hardening or tanning effect. Eyes : Causes severe eye irritation. Ingestion May cause irritation of mouth, throat, and stomach. May cause nausea, vomiting, headache and other central nervous system effects. Aspiration into the lungs during swallowing or subsequent vomiting may cause chemical pneumonitis, which can be fatal. Effects of long-term (chronic) exposure Prolonged skin contact may defat the skin and produce dermatitis. Prolonged or repeated contact may cause a hardening or tanning effect. Prolonged overexposure to product can result in permanent central nervous system changes. Prolonged overexposure may cause liver and kidney effects. Carcinogenic status : See TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION, Section 11. Additional health hazards Potential teratogen. Possible sensitizer. See TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION,
