Section 2

SECTION 2: Hazards identification

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW: This mixture contains inert gas(es) and the radioactive isotope Kyrpton-85. It is an odorless, colorless, nonflammable compressed gas packaged in cylinders at high pressures. This mixture can cause rapid suffocation when concentrations are sufficient to reduce oxygen levels below 19.5%. Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) may be required. OSHA REGULATORY STATUS: This material is considered hazardous by OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) RADIOACTIVITY HAZARDS: Krypton-85 is a radioactive isotope. Krypton-85 occurs naturally and a small amount of this isotope is normally present in the atmosphere. However, exposure to significant quantities may be harmful. Refer to applicable standards and regulations for workplace limits on radiation exposure. In the US reference 10 CFR 20.1201 for occupational dose limits for adults.

Principle Routes of Exposure

EYE CONTACT: No adverse effect. INGESTION: Not an applicable route of exposure. Product is a gas. INHALATION: Simple Asphyxiant. This gas mixture is non-toxic, but can reduce the amount of oxygen in the air necessary to support life. Exposure to oxygen-deficient atmospheres (less than 19.5%) may produce dizziness, nausea, vomiting, loss of consciousness, and death. At very low oxygen concentrations (less than 12%) unconsciousness and death may occur without warning. SKIN CONTACT: No adverse effect External radiation hazard, Inhalation TARGET ORGANS: All SYMPTOMS Radiation sickness nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and psychic depression

Potential health effects

OF REPEATED EXPOSURE

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure

OVEREXPOSURE None CARCINOGENICITY: Because it is a radioactive isotope, Krypton-85 is considered a potential carcinogen. Krypton (an inert gas) and the other inert components of this mixture are not listed in IARC, NTP, or OSHA Subpart Z as carcinogens or potential carcinogens. 3
