SECTION 2: Hazards identification
2.1 Classification of the substance or mixture
O, Xi oxidizing, irritating
R-phrase(s)
R9 Explosive when mixed with combustible material R36 Irritating to eyes The list of hazardous material [67/548/EC] does not contain ammonium nitrate otherwise the UN number of ammonium ni- trate is 2067 and classified as oxidizing material (class 5.1)according to ADR.
Health hazards
The fertilizers are basically harmless products when handled correctly. However, the following points should be noted: Skin contact May cause some irritation on prolonged or repeated contact. Eye contact May cause some irritation on prolonged or repeated contact Ingestion Large quantities may give rise to gastro-intestinal disorders Inhalation High dust concentrations of air-borne material may cause irritation of the nose and upper respira- tory tract with symptoms such as sore throat and coughing. Long term effect No known long term effects. Ammonium nitrate fertilizer 34%N 1
Environmental hazards
Ammonium nitrate is a nitrogen fertilizer. Heavy spillage may cause adverse environmental im- pact such as eutrophication in confined surface waters or nitrate contamination. See Section 12. 2.3. Other Fire, heating and detonation The fertilizer is not itself combustible but it can support combustion, even in the absence of air. On heating it melts and further heating can cause decomposition, releasing toxic fumes containing nitrogen oxides and ammonia. It has high resistance to detonation. Heating under strong confine- ment can lead to explosive behavior.
