Section 2

2.1 Classification of the substance or mixture

C: R35

Other physicochemical hazards

Strong acid, oxidising and corrosive. May react violently with reducing agents, alkalies, metals and a number of other substances. (See Section 10.)

Health hazards

Nitric acid causes severe burns. Skin contact: Highly corrosive, causes severe burns to all parts of the body. Eye contact: Causes severe burns and may cause blindness or permanent damage. Ingestion: Will immediately cause corrosion of and permanent damage to the gastro-intestinal tract. Inhalation: Fumes are corrosive to the respiratory tract and will cause severe coughing, sore throat and difficulty in breathing. Fluid buid up on the lung (pulmonary oedema) may occur up to 48 hours after exposure and could prove fatal. Long term effect Acute effects predominate and their severity is such that significant repeated or prolonged exposure is unlikely. Repeated exposure to high levels produces adverse effects on lung and teeth.

Environmental hazards

Harmful to aquatic life due to its acidity. Other Following exposure to acid/NOx fumes the patient should be kept under medical review for at least 48 hours as delayed pulmonary Œdema may develop.
