WHMIS Classification
1,0,0 2.3 Emergency Overview: These products contain crystalline silica as a naturally occuring contaminant. These products do not present an inhalation, ingestion, or contact health hazard unless subjected to machining, sanding or other working that generates dust exceeding the PEL/TLV. It is recommended that a NIOSH approved particulate respirator be worn whenever working with this product generating airborne particulate matter and dust exceeding the exposure limits. Job site air monitoring should be conducted to determine actual exposure when the PEL/TLV may be exceeded. This SDS contains valuable information critical to the safe handling and proper use of the product. This SDS should be made available for users of the product.
Potential health effects
Acute(Short term): Inhalation: Amounts of dust in excess of the PEL/TLV may cause irritation of the upper respiratory tract which may include coughing, sneezing and troubled breathing. Ingestion: Not an expected route of exposure, if ingested consult a physician. Eyes: Direct contact with particulate matter may cause irritation. If burning, itching or pain persist consult a physician. Skin: May cause slight irritation.
Long term hazards
Repeated, prolonged exposure to crystalline silica may cause severe damage to the lungs resulting in silicosis. The severity and risk of developing silicosis depends on the respirabe concentration, particle size of the silica dust and the duration of exposure. The amount of respirable silica generated will vary depending on sanding operations. Prolonged skin contact may dry the skin causing cracking or dermatitis.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure
Pre-existing lung and upper respiratory diseases may be aggravated by dust exposure.
