SECTION 2: Hazards identification
OSHA EMERGENCY OVERVIEW Appearance Odor Chemical Family White crystalline, granular powder. Foul sulfurous odor with sharp sulfur dioxide odor. Powder Mixture ROUTES OF ENTRY Inhalation Skin Contact Eyes Yes POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS EYES Moderately to severely irritating to eyes if in contact with product. May cause pain, tear production, redness, and blurred vision. Prolonged or severe exposures may cause photophobia, burns to the cornea, chemical conjunctivitis, and damage to vision. Exposure to dusts and fumes may also cause eye irritation, redness, and tear production. SKIN Irritating to the skin. May cause redness, burning sensation, and rashes. Prolonged contact may cause burns and tissue necrosis. (Absorption through skin is not significant.) Skin contact may cause allergic reactions in sulfite-sensitive individuals. INGESTION Harmful if swallowed. Irritating to the tissues of mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach, causing increased salivation and possible chemical burns. Likely to cause cause gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea. May cause central nervous system depression with symptoms of irritability, restlessness, and convulsions; may cause cyanosis, and respiratory and cardiovascular collapse. Effects may be delayed. Estimated lethal dose is 40 grams. INHALATION Dust or vapors inhaled in excessive amounts may cause respiratory tract irritation, possibly severe, with possible coughing, burning sensation, laryngitis, wheezing, shortness of breath, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Sulfur dioxide vapors produced by contacting product with water or acid are extremely irritating to the respiratory tract, and noticeable even at levels below the permitted occupational exposure limits, but may produce olfactory fatigue. Sulfur dioxide vapors can provoke bronchospasm and allergic reactions in asthmatics and sulfite-sensitive individuals. Exposure to excessive levels can damage upper respiratory tract and lung tissues, possibly producing pulmonary edema and even death.
Acute Health Hazards
None known beyond those listed above.
Health hazards
Prolonged or repeated exposure may produce or aggravate asthma and sulfite sensitization in susceptible individuals. OTHER Exposure may aggravate pre-existing conditions, including dermatitis (skin), and asthma and similar conditions (lungs). Sulfites may produce severe allergic reactions in sulfite-sensitive individuals. Get immediate medical attention if signs of allergic reaction appear. CARCINOGENICITY
