Potential health effects
INHALATION: May be harmful if inhaled. Exposure to vapors above the established exposure limit results in respiratory irritation which may lead to difficulty in breathing and tightness in the chest. Headache, dizziness, nausea, and loss of coordination are indications of excessive exposure to vapors or spray mists. Continued exposure may cause increased light-headedness, staggering, unconsciousness and even death. With high exposure levels, effects can include central nervous system (CNS) depression (intoxication) and cardiac arrhythmia. As a result of previous repeated exposures or a single large dose, certain individuals develop isocyanate sensitization (chemical asthma) which will cause them to react to a later exposure to isocyanate at levels well below the TLV. Overexposure to isocyanates has also been reported to cause lung damage (including decrease in lung function) which may be permanent. Exposure to diisocyanates may cause the following human health effects: Skin irritation and allergic reactions, respiratory irritation, respiratory sensitization and lung toxicity; some diisocyanates also may cause cancer. The likelihood that these effects will occur depends on a number of factors; among them the level of exposure, frequency of exposure, part of body exposed and sensitivity of the exposed individual. SKIN: May cause severe irritation due to defatting of skin. Redness. Swelling, Skin burns. Solvents can penetrate skin and may cause systemic effects similar to those identified under inhalation. Repeated or prolonged contact with solvents can dry, defat and crack skin causing increased susceptibility to infection. Isocyanates react with skin protein and moisture and can cause irritation, which may include the following symptoms: reddening, swelling, rash, scaling or blistering. Once sensitized, an individual may react even to airborne levels below the TLV with the following symptoms: itching and tingling of the earlobes and neck, rash, hives, swelling of the arms and legs or other symptoms common to allergic dermatitis. EYE: May cause severe eye irritation. Redness. Swelling. Tearing. Conjunctivitis. May cause slight corneal injury. INGESTION: May cause irritation of the gastrointestinal tract with vomiting. If vomiting results in aspiration, chemical pneumonia could follow. Absorption through gastrointestinal tract may produce symptoms of central nervous system depression ranging from light headedness, loss of balance, unconsciousness, coma and even death. Irritation and corrosive action can occur in the mouth, stomach tissue and digestive tract if swallowed.
