Causes severe skin burns and eye damage
Section 2
SECTION 2: Hazards identification
OSHA Emergency Overview: Danger! This is a Clear, Odorless, Colorless, syrupy liquid with no odor that causes Eye and Skin Burns. Extremely corrosive. Causes severe burns and eye damage. Mist: Causes respiratory irritation. Harmful if inhaled. Harmful or fatal if swallowed. Reacts violently with water. Concentrated Sulfuric Acid will react with many organic materials and may cause fire due to the heat of the reaction. Not flammable, but reacts with most metals to form explosive/flammable hydrogen gas. Read the entire SDS for a more thorough evaluation of the hazards.
2.1 Classification of the substance or mixture
Global Harmonized Classification see Section 16) Skin Corrosion/Irritation Category 1A (H314) Serious Eye Damage/Eye Irritation Category 1 (H318) Carcinogenicity Category 1A (H350) Hazardous to the aquatic environment - long term hazard Category 3 (H412) GHS Label, Hazards and Precautionary Statements
Hazard pictograms
Hazards Definitions See Section 16) Label Signal Word: Danger
Hazard statements
Causes severe skin burns and eye damage(H314) May cause cancer (H350) Harmful to aquatic life. (H412)
Prevention
Obtain special instructions before use. (P201)* Do not handle until all safety precautions have been read and understood. (P202)* Avoid breathing dust/fume/gas/mist/ vapors/spray. (P260)* Wash skin thoroughly after handling. (P264)* Wear protective gloves, protective clothing, eye protection, face protection. (P280)** Avoid release to the environment. (P273)*
Response
IF EXPOSED OR CONCERNED: Get medical advice/attention (P308+P313)* IF SWALLOWED: Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. (P301+P330+P331)* Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor. (P310)* Specific Treatment see Section 4 First Aid Measures, Ingestion on this label. (P321) IF ON SKIN (or Hair): Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Rinse skin / hair with water/shower. (P303+P361+P353)* Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor. (P310)* Specific Treatment see Section 4 First Aid Measures, Skin Exposure on this label (P321) Wash contaminated clothing before reuse. (P363)* IF INHALED: Remove to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing. (P304+P340)* Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor. (P310)* Specific Treatment see Section 4 First Aid Measures, Inhalation on this label. (P321) IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. (P305+P351+P338) Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor. Potential health effects
Hazardous in case of skin contact, of eye contact, of ingestion, of inhalation
Principle Routes of Exposure
Entry Skin contact, Inhalation, Eye contact Target Organs: skin, respiratory system, eyes Exposure Limits: Limits Agency Type 1 mg/m3 (TWA) 8 hours ACGIH TLV 3 mg/m (STEL) 15 minutes ACGIH TLV 1 mg/m3 (TWA) 8 hours OSHA PEL 1 mg/m3 (TWA) 10 hours NIOSH REL Acute Exposure Symptoms Inhalation (breathing): Causes respiratory irritation and at high concentrations may cause severe injury, burns, or death. Effects of exposure may be delayed. Eye Contact: Immediate pain, severe burns and corneal damage, which may result in permanent blindness. Skin Contact: Causes burns, and brownish or yellow stains. Concentrated solutions may cause second or third degree burns with severe necrosis. Prolonged and repeated exposure to dilute solutions may cause irritation, redness, pain and drying and cracking of the skin. Ingestion (swallowing): Causes severe irritation or burns of the mouth, throat, and esophagus.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure
Skin irritation may be aggravated in individuals with existing skin lesions. Breathing of vapors or sprays (mists) may aggravate acute or chronic asthma and chronic pulmonary disease such as emphysema and bronchitis. Chronic Exposure Symptoms: Carcinogenicity Data: Strong inorganic acid mists containing sulfuric acid (Occupational exposures) : Proven (Human, Group 1, IARC) ; Suspected (Human Group A2, ACGIH) ; Group 3 (NTP) ; Classification not applicable to sulfuric acid and sulfuric acid solutions.
