Specific Hazards: Graphite products present minimal risk to human health and the environment when used as intended in its manufactured and shipped state. However, prolonged inhalation of graphite dust at high concentrations greater than the PEL may cause pneumoconiosis, pulmonary fibrosis, emphysema and corpulmonale having symptoms including cough, shortness of breath, and decrease in pulmonary function. Prolonged inhalation of silica, crystalline quartz, dust can cause fibrosis of the lungs (silicosis). Medical Conditions Aggravated: Pre-existing pulmonary disorders such as emphysema may possibly be aggravated by prolonged exposure to high concentrations of graphite dusts. Section 3.
