EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance/Odor
Oily, colorless to slightly yellow - brown turbid liquid / Odorless SHORT TERM EXPOSURE: Acute, Corrosive to skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. INHALATION: Exposure to vapor, mist or liquid can cause corrosive burns to the upper respiratory tract, including nose, mouth, and throat. Lung irritation and pulmonary edema can also occur. Severe exposures could result in chemical pneumonia. EYES: Contact can cause severe damage including conrneal burns, conjunctivitis, and blindness. The severity of the effects depend on concentration and how soon after exposure the eyes are washed. SKIN: Corrosive. Contact may cause burns and tissue destruction. Note that irritation may follow an initial latency (delay between the time the exposure occurs and when the sense of irritation starts). The latent period can vary as much as several minutes for a dilute solution < 2%) to seconds with more concentrated solutions (25 - 99%). Prolonged or repeated contact, even to dilute concentrations, can cause a high degree of tissue destruction. INGESTION: Corrosive. Severe burns and complete tissue perforation of mucous membranes of mouth, throat and stomach. OSHA REGULATED:................. Yes LISTED CARCINOGEN ........... NTP No IARC MONOGRAPHS No
Potential health effects
INHALATION: ............................ CORROSIVE INGESTION:................................ CORROSIVE SKIN (DERMAL): ....................... CORROSIVE OVER EXPOSURE EFFECTS Inhalation Respiratory tract irritant, may cause burns on acute contact. Ingestion: Severe irritant to mucous membranes and may cause perforation of the esophagus and stomach. Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, general gastro-intestinal upset can be expected. Skin Contact: Irritant, possibly corrosive if contact is prolonged. Eye Contact: Irritant, possibly corrosive to eye tissues. Tearing, redness, pain, impaired vision are symptoms. Chronic Exposure: Development of a defatting dermatitis or destruction of skin on prolonged contact with acids have been reported. Continued irritation may lead to increased susceptibility to respiratory illness. Aggravation of Pre- existing Conditions: Persons with pre-existing skin disorders or eye problems, or impaired kidney or respiratory function may be more susceptible to the effects of the substance.
