Hazard statements
F+" - Extremely flammable "Xn" - Harmful "N" - Dangerous for the environment EMERGENCY OVERVIEW IMMEDIATE CONCERNS: DANGER! Extremely flammable liquid and vapor. Vapors may cause flash fire and explosion. Harmful or fatal if swallowed. Contents under pressure. Can cause eye, skin and respiratory tract irritation. Methanol may be absorbed through the skin. Methyl acetate creates a special hazard because it floats on water.
Potential health effects
EYES: Contact causes severe eye irritation with redness, tearing and pain. May cause possible corneal injury. SKIN: May cause moderate skin irritation. Prolonged or repeated contact can result in defatting and drying of the skin which may result in skin irritation and dermatitis (rash). SKIN ABSORPTION: May be absorbed through the skin. INGESTION: Harmful or fatal if swallowed. Inflammation of mouth, throat, esophagus and/or stomach. Can cause gastrointestinal irritation with symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Methanol may cause systemic toxicity with acidosis. May cause central nervous system depression (e.g., narcosis involving a loss of coordination, weakness, fatigue, mental confusion, and blurred vision). May cause cardiopulmonary system effects. INHALATION: Irritating to the nose, throat and respiratory tract. Exposure to high concentrations of vapor or mist can cause central nervous system depression with symptoms of headache, dizziness, stupor, loss of consciousness or death depending on concentration and duration of exposure. Exposure to high concentrations can cause irregular heartbeat, cardiac arrest and death. Prolonged exposure may cause adverse effects on the lungs, liver, kidney and heart.
Principle Routes of Exposure
Eye Contact, Ingestion, Inhalation, Skin Absorption, and Skin Contact TARGET ORGAN STATEMENT: Central nervous system (CNS) depression, liver, kidneys, pancreas, heart, lungs and brain. Overexposure to methanol may cause visual impairment or blindness. IRRITANCY: Eyes, nose, throat, respiratory tract, and skin irritation.
