Section 2
SECTION 2: Hazards identification
Emergency Overview: This clear, colorless liquid with a characteristic odor is flammable and toxic. Responders must protect against possible inhalation and contact exposure. Fire protection must be available to prevent or rapidly extinguish a fire. Symptoms of Over Exposure by Route of Exposure: This material may be harmful if swallowed, inhaled, or injected into skin. This solution can cause skin and eye irritation or damage. The solution can be very irritating to mucous membranes and the respiratory tract. Inhalation: Inhalation of this material may lead to irritation of the nose and throat. Inhalation may cause systemic effects: conjunctiva irritation, respiratory system effects, changes in EEG, carbohydrate metabolism, nasal effects, conjunctiva irritation, respiratory system effects, muscle weakness. Overexposure to vapors may produce central nervous system depression, causing narcosis. Symptoms of overexposure may include fatigue, confusion, hallucinations, nausea, confusion, headache, decreased pulse rate, numbness, depression, dizziness, loss of coordination, fatigue, giddiness, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and drowsiness. Peculiar skin sensations (e.g. pins and needles) or numbness may be experienced after inhalation exposures. Exposure to high concentrations of this material vapor may cause unconsciousness and death.
Principle Routes of Exposure
Inhalation, skin contact, eyes, ingestion Target Organs: CNS, eyes, circulatory and respiratory systems, skin, kidney, liver. Contact With Skin or Eyes: Contact of the product with the skin can produce irritated skin. Splashes in the eye may cause eye irritation, redness, tearing, and temporary corneal damage or blindness. Skin Absorption: Isopropyl Alcohol is absorbed through the skin and may result in effects similar to inhalation exposure. Ingestion: Ingestion of small quantities of Isopropyl Alcohol can cause irreversible damage to the nervous system, or death. It cannot be made non-poisonous. ASPIRATION HAZARD. This material can enter lungs during swallowing or vomiting and cause lung inflammation and pneumonia. Swallowing this material may cause abdominal spasms and other symptoms which are similar to those experienced after inhalation exposures. Aspiration of the material into the lungs can cause chemical pneumonitis. Injection: Injection of 4009 Blend can lead to redness and irritation of the surrounding tissue.
Potential health effects
Or Risks From Exposure (An Explanation In Lay Terms) Acute: Severe irritation of the tissue that had contact with the product (skin, eyes, mucous membranes). Drowsiness, fatigue, confusion may be experienced after inhalation or ingestion of the material. Chronic: Reports of chronic exposures to this material describe anemia, adverse effects on bone marrow, nasal or laryngeal tumors, or other injury. Liver and kidney damage may occur. Isopropyl Alcohol may cause birth defects. Repeated or prolonged skin contact with 4009 Blend has a defatting action, causing drying, redness, and dermatitis.
