SECTION 2: Hazards identification
The hazards identified in this section refer to column packing which is normally not available for occupational exposures. EMERGENCY OVERVIEW: Silica used in SPE columns is a white powder. Its primary hazard is airborne particulates (dust). Considered a nuisance dust.
Health hazards
SKIN: Abrasive. Prolonged contact may have drying effect. EYES: Irritant. May cause discomfort. INHALATION: Existing medical conditions such as asthma or bronchitis may be aggravated by exposure to silica dust. INGESTION: Amorphous silica is an acceptable food additive in many countries.
