SECTION 2: Hazards identification
This material is considered hazardous by the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard ( 29 CFR 1910. 1200 ) EMERGENCY OVERVIEW REACTIVITY DATA - INCOMPATIBILITIES: Water or Steam, acids, chlorine fluorine, hydrogen peroxide (greater than 52%), nitric acid, nitrous oxide, phosphorus vapor and sulfur dioxide. HANDLING: Wear appropriate protective equipment. Avoid breathing dust. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Use with ventilation that will keep any dust concentration below the exposure limits. Keep material dry and away from moisture. Keep container closed. Wash thoroughly after handling. Do not allow dust or powder to accumulate on equipment or building surfaces. A fine fraction of manganese powder (smaller than 74) may ignite at a concentration of 0.125 oz/ft3 or higher at a temperture of 420c or above. When handling manganese powder in a manner likely to generate dust concentrations approaching 0.125 oz/ft3 or above, inerting with nitrogen or carbon dioxide gas is recommended. Additional information is available in U.S. Bureau of Mines reports on investigation RI 6516 Explosiviry of Metal Powders and RI 6543 Preventing Ignition of Dust Dispersions by Inerting.
