Section 2

SECTION 2: Hazards identification

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW: The SAFETY-SILV® 45 and SAFETY-SILV® 56 components of this product are odorless, solid wire, which have a metallic luster. The STAY-SILV® WHITE BRAZING FLUX is an odorless, smooth, white paste. The STAY-SILV® WHITE BRAZING FLUX can irritate contaminated tissue. This product’s components are not flammable nor reactive. The STAY-SILV® WHITE BRAZING FLUX contains a fluoride compound, which may react with glass, clay, and other silica based materials. If involved in a fire, the SAFETY-SILV® 45 and SAFETY-SILV® 56 may generate irritating fumes and a variety of metal oxides. If involved in a fire, the STAY-SILV® WHITE BRAZING FLUX may decompose to release potassium fluoride, boric anhydride, and hydrogen fluoride. Emergency responders must wear personal protective equipment suitable for the situation to which they are responding. SYMPTOMS OF OVER-EXPOSURE BY ROUTE OF EXPOSURE: The most significant routes of over-exposure for this product are by skin or eye contact. During brazing operations, the most significant route of over-exposure is via inhalation of fumes. INHALATION: SAFETY-SILV® 45 and SAFETY-SILV® 56: Inhalation is not anticipated to be a significant route of over-exposure to the rods. Inhalation of large amounts of particulates generated by the rods during metal processing operations may be physically irritating and cause deposits of dust in nasal passages. Inhalation of dusts of Silver (a constituent of this product’s components) can cause discoloration of eyes, nasal septum, throat, and skin. Inhalation of dusts and fumes of Copper and Zinc (constituents of this product’s components) can cause metal fume fever. Symptoms can include a metallic or sweet taste in the mouth, sweating, shivering, headache, throat irritation, fever, chills, thirstiness, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, weakness, fatigue, and shortness of breath. STAY-SILV® WHITE BRAZING FLUX: If fumes or particulates of this component are inhaled, they will irritate the nose, throat, and lungs. Dusts and particulates of this product are irritating to the entire respiratory tract, may destroy mucous membranes, and may cause severe pneumonitis. Inhalation over-exposure may cause hypocalcemia (calcium deficiency in the blood). Severe inhalation over-exposure may be fatal. CONTACT WITH SKIN or EYES: SAFETY-SILV® 45 and SAFETY-SILV® 56: Contact of the rod form of this product with the skin is not anticipated to be irritating. Contact with the rod form of this product can be physically damaging to the eye (i.e., foreign object). Fumes generated during brazing operations may be irritating to the skin and eyes. Symptoms of skin over-exposure may include irritation and redness; prolonged or repeated skin over-exposures may lead to dermatitis. Contact with the molten core rods will burn contaminated skin or eyes. STAY-SILV® WHITE BRAZING FLUX: Contact with the eyes will cause irritation, pain, tearing, and reddening. Brief contact may cause eye damage and prolonged contact may cause permanent damage. Depending on the duration of over-exposure, skin contact may cause irritation and burns. Chronic over-exposure to this component may cause borism (dry skin, eruptions, and gastrointestinal disturbances) or pustular dermatitis (visible collections of pus). Solutions of this product will have the same effects. SKIN ABSORPTION: SAFETY-SILV® 45 and SAFETY-SILV® 56: Skin absorption is not known to be a significant route of over-exposure for any constituent of these components. STAY-SILV® WHITE BRAZING FLUX: One of this component’s decomposition products may be hydrogen fluoride. Hydrogen fluoride can penetrate the skin and produce burns that may not be immediately painful or visible; the burns impact the lower layers of skin and bone tissue. Hydrogen fluoride exposures involving 20 percent of the body or more can be fatal through systemic fluoride poisoning. INGESTION: Ingestion is not anticipated to be a likely route of occupational exposure for this product. If ingested, the following symptoms of exposure may occur. SAFETY-SILV® 45 and SAFETY-SILV® 56: If particulates or fumes, generated during brazing operations, are ingested (i.e., through poor hygiene practices), nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach ache, degeneration of blood and liver cells, gastro-intestinal bleeding, decreased urine output, listlessness, rapid heartbeat, convulsions, and coma may occur. Severe ingestion over-exposure may be fatal. STAY-SILV® WHITE BRAZING FLUX: If this component is swallowed, burns of the mouth, throat, esophagus, and other tissues of the digestive system may occur immediately upon contact. Symptoms of ingestion of this component may include severe diarrhea, abdominal cramps, red lesions on the skin and mucous membranes, lowered blood pressure, circulatory collapse, rapid heartbeat, blue color to the skin, delirium, convulsions, and coma. Ingestion over-exposure may cause hypocalcemia (calcium deficiency in the blood). Chronic ingestion of Potassium Bifluoride (a constituent of this component) may cause osseous fluorosis (increased radiographic density of the bones). Symptoms of chronic ingestion may include kidney damage, asthma, and pain in the joints and muscles. Ingestion of this component can be fatal. (Continued) INJECTION: Though not a likely route of occupational exposure for any component of this product, injection (via punctures or lacerations in the skin) may cause local reddening, tissue swelling, and discomfort in addition to the wound.

Potential health effects

OR RISKS FROM EXPOSURE An Explanation in Lay Terms. Symptoms associated with over- exposure to this product and the fumes generated during brazing operations are as follows: ACUTE: SAFETY-SILV® 45 and SAFETY-SILV® 56: The chief acute health hazard associated with these components would be the potential for irritation of contaminated skin and eyes when exposed to fumes during brazing operations. Inhalation of large amounts of particulates generated by this product during metal processing operations may be physically irritating and cause deposits of dust in nasal passages. Inhalation of dusts and fumes of Copper and Zinc (components of this product) can cause metal fume fever. Symptoms can include a metallic or sweet taste in the mouth, sweating, shivering, headache, throat irritation, fever, chills, thirstiness, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, weakness, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Contact with the molten material will burn contaminated skin or eyes. If particulates or fumes, generated during brazing operations, are ingested (i.e., through poor hygiene practices), nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach ache, degeneration of blood and liver cells, gastro-intestinal bleeding, decreased urine output, listlessness, rapid heartbeat, convulsions, and coma may occur. Severe ingestion over-exposure may be fatal. STAY-SILV® WHITE BRAZING FLUX: Fumes and particulates of this product are irritating to the entire respiratory tract, may destroy mucous membranes, and may cause severe pneumonitis. Severe inhalation over-exposure may be fatal. Brief eye contact may cause eye damage and prolonged eye contact may cause permanent damage. Depending on the duration of skin over-exposure, skin contact may cause irritation and burns. One of this component’s decomposition products may be hydrogen fluoride. Hydrogen fluoride can penetrate the skin and produce burns that may not be immediately painful or visible; the burns impact the lower layers of skin and bone tissue. If this component is swallowed, burns of the mouth, throat, esophagus, and other tissues of the digestive system may occur immediately upon contact. Symptoms of ingestion of this component may include severe diarrhea, abdominal cramps, red lesions on the skin and mucous membranes, lowered blood pressure, circulatory collapse, rapid heartbeat, blue color to the skin, delirium, convulsions, and coma. Ingestion of this component can be fatal. CHRONIC: SAFETY-SILV® 45 and SAFETY-SILV® 56: Chronic skin over-exposure to the fumes of this product during brazing operations may produce dermatitis (red, inflamed skin). STAY-SILV® WHITE BRAZING FLUX: Chronic skin over-exposure to this component may cause borism (dry skin, eruptions, and gastrointestinal disturbances) or pustular dermatitis (visible collections of pus).
