Section 2
SECTION 2: Hazards identification
Flammable liquids - Category 3 Flash point = 42 °C closed cup (ASTM D56 method) Skin corrosion/irritation - Category 2
2.1 Classification of the substance or mixture
Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure (narcotic effects) - Category 3 - Narcotic effect
Aspiration hazard
Category 1 WHMIS pictograms DANGER Flammable liquid and vapour (H226) Warning Causes skin irritation (H315) May cause drowsiness or dizziness (H336) May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways (H304) Danger NOTE! Harmful by inhalation. May damage the target organ.
Precautionary statements
Avoid inhaling this product. Avoid breathing dust / fume / gas / mist / vapors / spray. Intervention : SKIN CONTACT Wash with soap and water. Remove Precautionary contaminated clothing and launder before reuse. EYE CONTACT Flush eyes with water for at least 15 minutes while holding eyelids open. INHALATION Remove person to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. INGESTION Do not induce vomiting. Guard against aspiration into lungs by having the individual turn on to their left side. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Potential acute effects on health Eyes Slightly irritating, but will not injure eye tissue. Low toxicity. Frequent or prolonged contact may irritate the skin and cause Skin a skin rash (dermatitis). Skin contact may aggravate an existing dermatitis condition. High vapour/aerosol concentrations (attainable at elevated temperatures Inhalation well above ambient) are irritating to the eyes and the respiratory tract, and may cause headaches, dizziness, anesthesia, drowsiness, unconsciousness, and other central nervous system effects. Low toxicity. Small amounts of liquid aspirated into the respiratory system Ingestion during ingestion or from vomiting may cause mild to severe pulmonary injury and possibly death. Potential chronic effects on health
Potential chronic health
Not available. Carcinogenic effects Not available. Mutagenic effects Although abnormal sperm were observed after an interperitoneal injection
Teratogenic Effects
in rats, xylene did not produce reproductive effects. An increase in menstrual disorders has been reported in women exposed to organic solvents but it is not possible to attribute this to xylene alone. Xylene has produced fetotoxic effects (delayed ossification and behavioral effects) in animals, in the absence of maternal toxicity. One study found that significant fetal effects at doses that did not cause high maternal toxicity included reduced fetal weight and increased incidence of malformed Effects on fertility fetuses. In other studies where rats and mice were exposed by inhalation or ingestion, harmful effects in the offspring (teratogenicity, embryotoxicity and/or fetotoxicity) were either not observed or were observed in the presence of significant harmful effects in the mothers. There have been a few studies investigating the mutagenic potential of xylenes. These studies (induction of sister chromatid exchanges and chromosomal aberrations in human lymphocytes (white blood cells)) were negative. See Toxicological Information (section 11)
