SECTION 2: Hazards identification
(29 CFR 1910.1200) Physical state Solid. Appearance Black powder. Emergency overview WARNING! May cause allergic skin reaction. Dust may cause eye, skin and respiratory tract irritation. Processing may generate graphite dusts and fumes with the below listed potential health effects.
Principle Routes of Exposure
Eyes Skin Inhalation Eyes. Skin. Inhalation. Ingestion. Dust may irritate the eyes. Dust may irritate skin. May cause allergic respiratory reaction. Dust may irritate the respiratory system. Dust and fumes generated from the material can enter the body by inhalation. Frequent inhalation of dust over a long period of time increases the risk of developing lung diseases. Ingestion Target organs Ingestion of dusts generated during working operations may cause nausea and vomiting. Eyes. Skin. Lung. Respiratory system. Reproductive system.
Potential chronic health
Suspected to cause hypersensitivity and allergy. Possible cancer hazard - may cause cancer based on animal data. Boric acid: High doses have demonstrated effects on fertility, testes, and developmental effects on the fetus in laboratory animals. Relevance of these findings to humans is uncertain. Prolonged and repeated overexposure to dust can lead to benign pneumoconiosis. Carbon black: Certain carbon blacks have proved carcinogenic in animal studies. Inhalation animal studies of high concentrations resulted in chronic inflammation, lung fibrosis and lung tumors. Epidemiology studies of workers include findings of bronchitis, pneumonia, emphysema and excess cancer. Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde has carcinogenic potential and is a known skin and respiratory sensitizer. Exposure to formaldehyde may cause respiratory sensitization in some individuals or aggravate pre-existing asthmatic conditions. Pre-existing pulmonary disorders, such as emphysema, may possibly be aggravated by prolonged exposure to high concentrations of graphite dusts and carbon black. Signs and symptoms Exposed individuals may experience eye tearing, redness, and discomfort.
Environmental effects
The product is not expected to be hazardous to the environment.
