Potential health effects
Inhalation: Causes severe respiratory tract irritation or burns resulting in possible lung damage. May cause nausea and headaches. Vapors or mist in unusually high concentrations generated from spraying, heating or use in poorly ventilated areas can cause a burning sensation, shortness of breath, headache, nausea, coughing and wheezing. Prolonged or repeated overexposure may result in fluid in the lungs, chemical pneumonia and serious damage to lung tissue and respiratory tract. Absorption through the lungs may cause symptoms similar to those identified under ingestion. Effects include: Nausea, CNS depression, headache, dizziness, lung injury and Liver disfunction. Eye Contact: Eye contact is corrosive, causes burns. Prolonged eye contact can result in permanent damage. Skin Contact: Skin contact is corrosive, causes burns. Prolonged skin contact can result in permanent damage. May cause sensitization. The following applies to Diethanolamine and associated materials: Preliminary findings from the chronic Diethanolamine skin painting study include liver and kidney tumors in mice. The significance of these findings are being evaluated by NTP. Skin Absorption: Harmful if absorbed through the skin. Ingestion: May be fatal if ingested. If ingested, causes burns to the linings of the mouth, esophagus and stomach. Effects include: Drowsiness, nausea, fatigue, CNS depression, pain, vomiting, diarrhea, thirst, circulatory collapse, coma, headache, digestive tract irritation, convulsions, irritation, pulmonary edema (from aspiration into the lungs from vomiting) which may result in lung injury, weakness of facial muscles, diminished hearing, difficulty swallowing, blurring of vision and cardiac failure. Diethylene & Ethylene glycol can cause liver and kidney damage. Tumorigenic and reproductive effects have been reported for some amines based on animal studies. Ethylene glycol has been shown to produce teratogenic and developmental toxic effects in laboratory animals. Animal studies with large doses of Diethylene glycol indicated there was evidence of reproductive toxicity.
