SECTION 2: Hazards identification
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW PHYSICAL APPEARANCE: Fine powder, tan in color. IMMEDIATE CONCERNS Cadmium Warning! Inhalation or ingestion of dust or fumes may produce both acute and chronic effects. Cadmium and cadmium oxide fume are a known cancer hazard. Fumes from the soldering/brazing process are irritating to the eyes and respiratory system. Hot metal can cause eye and skin burns. Avoid breathing fumes from the soldering/brazing process. Use only with adequate ventilation.
Potential health effects
EYES: Dust may cause physical eye irritation. SKIN: May cause skin irritation. Hot molten metal may cause burns to the skin. Wear protective equipment when working with molten metal. INGESTION Silver Prolonged ingestion of silver compounds may cause a permanent bluish discoloration of the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Copper Ingestion may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea Zinc Ingestion of soluble salts of this material may cause abdominal irritation resulting in nausea and vomiting. INHALATION Silver Prolonged inhalation of silver compounds may cause a permanent bluish discoloration of the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Copper: If inhaled, may cause sneezing, nausea, weakness, fever. Fumes from heating may cause metal fume fever. Zinc: This material is relatively non-toxic to humans by inhalation. However, acute overexposure to zinc oxide fume may cause metal fume fever, characterized by flu-like symptoms such as chills, fever, nausea and vomiting. Cadmium: Fumes are highly toxic. Fumes may cause serious systemic poisoning. If inhaled, may cause permanent lung damage, loss of sense of smell, occasional ulcerations of the nasal passages, rhinolaryngitis, coughing, shortness of breath, kidney damage, liver damage, blood damage, and possibly death. Lung damage may be irreversible. 1000 Page 2 of 7 SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF OVEREXPOSURE ACUTE TOXICITY: Cadmium poisoning [from fume inhalation] produces symptoms of chest pains, cough, or fever. Very high exposures can cause death with symptoms of acute pneumonitis. Acute overexposure to zinc oxide fume evolved from heating this product may cause metal fume fever, characterized by flu-like symptoms such as chills, fever, nausea and vomiting.
Potential chronic health
Silver Chronic exposure may produce argyria, a permanent blue-gray discoloration of the skin, eyes, mucous membranes and respiratory tract. Skin contact with silver powder produce localized irritation and/or argyria. Copper: Prolonged or repeated exposure to the material may cause: skin and hair discoloration, skin irritation, dermatitis, runny nose, irritation of the mucous membranes. Repeated ingestion may cause:damage to liver, kidneys. Repeated inhalation may cause chronic respiratory disease. Cadmium: On repeated and cumulative exposure to cadmium oxide fume, irreversible kidney damage may result, characterized by increased excretion of low molecular weight proteins in urine. Adverse effects on the lungs includes loss of lung function and symptoms characteristic of emphysema. The severity of these effects increases both with fume concentration and cumulative exposure. CARCINOGENICITY: Ingredient(s) of this product are listed as carcinogens. See Section 11 for further details. REPRODUCTIVE TOXICITY REPRODUCTIVE EFFECTS Warning Cadmium is listed under State of California Proposition 65 regulations as being known to cause cancer, birth defects and/or other reproductive toxicity.
Teratogenic Effects
Warning Cadmium is listed under State of California Proposition 65 regulations as being known to cause developmental toxicity.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure
Persons with pre-existing disorders of the liver, kidney, pulmonary function or having Wilson's disease may be more susceptible to the effects of this material. ROUTES OF ENTRY Potential routes of entry include eye contact, skin contact, inhalation of metallic dusts or fume evolved from heating of this product. TARGET ORGAN STATEMENT Affected target organs skin, respiratory system, mucous membranes, liver, kidneys, conjunctiva, GI tract
