Potential health effects
This compound may produce allergic sensitization in some individuals. In such cases, even a small future exposure can cause symptoms. Inhalation: Causes irritation to the respiratory tract. Symptoms may include coughing, shortness of breath. May produce pulmonary sensitization or allergic asthma. Ingestion: Effects should be less severe than exposure to higher concentrations which can cause burns to mouth, throat, and stomach, and possible kidney or liver damage. Skin Contact: Causes irritation to skin. Symptoms include redness, itching, and pain. May produce skin sensitization or allergic skin reactions. Eye Contact: Causes irritation, redness, and pain. Exposure to high concentrations may cause corneal injury or blindness. Chronic Exposure: Chronic exposure may affect kidneys and liver. Certain, mainly water-soluble, hexavalent chromium compounds, have been determined to be human carcinogens. Aggravation of Pre-existing Conditions: Persons with pre-existing skin disorders, asthma, allergies or known sensitization to chromic acid or chromates may be more susceptible to the effects of this material.
