Section 2
SECTION 2: Hazards identification
67/548/EEC CLASSIFICATION OF THE SUBSTANCE OR MIXTURE This product does not meet the criteria for classification as hazardous as defined in the Regulation EC
2.3 Other hazards
This product is an inorganic substance and does not meet the criteria for PBT or vPvB in accordance with Annex XIII of REACH. Zircon contains trace amounts of the naturally occurring radioactive substances uranium and thorium (NORM). However, the concentrations are not sufficient (see part 3) for zircon to be classified as a radioactive substance under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material (limit of 10 Bq/g for NORM). The main radiological hazard from the product is internal exposure from small amounts of alpha particles given off by inhaled dust. Suitable Dust control measures shall be employed to ensure occupational exposure to generated dust and alpha particles are kept as low as reasonably achievable. External exposure is from gamma radiation. As a guide, a person may work in dust concentrations of 3mg/m3 for a full year without exceeding the maximum dose for a worker. Respirable dust levels in typical zircon processing operations are reported in IAEA Safety Report No. 51, and are less than 25% of the maximum dose to workers of 1mSv/y (ICRP).
2.1 Classification of the substance or mixture
This product does not meet the criteria for classification as hazardous as defined in the Regulation EC 1272/2008 and in Directive 67/548/CEE. This product contains less than 1% of respirable quartz. Depending on the type of handling and use (e.g. grinding, drying) airborne respirable crystalline silica (quartz- cristobalite) may be generated. Prolonged and/or massive inhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust may cause lung fibrosis, commonly referred to as silicosis. Principal symptoms of silicosis are cough and breathlessness. Occupational exposure to respirable crystalline silica dust should be monitored and controlled. This product should be handled with care to avoid dust generation.
