2.1 Classification of the substance or mixture

This material is considered an irritant under the criteria of the Federal OSHA Hazard Communication Standard 29CFR 1910.1200. Irritant

Signal word

Causes eye irritation Causes skin irritation Issue 03/10/2021 Name: Date: Emergency Overview: Activated carbon particles on the floor make the floor slippery. Particles may irritate the eyes and cause mechanical injury. Wet activated carbon depletes oxygen from the air, and therefore dangerously low levels of oxygen may be encountered in enclosed spaces. Before entering a vessel, workers should determine its oxygen content and work procedures for potentially low oxygen areas should be followed. Fire & Explosion Hazards: The adsorption of organic compounds onto activated carbon generates heat. In rare instances, adsorbed compounds may also react on the carbon surface to generate additional heat. If these heat sources are not properly dissipated, the carbon bed temperature may rise to the point where the carbon can ignite, leading to a fire or other hazardous condition.

Potential health effects

Eye Contact: Dust that contacts eyes may be irritating or cause mechanical injury. Skin Contact: Dust may cause slight irritation. Inhalation: Dust may be irritating to the respiratory tract and cause coughing or sneezing.
